So what is the etymology of the feminine/masculine/neuter variation of nouns in Latin-based languages?

Inquiring minds want to know.

The use of grammatical gender dates to pre-history, which makes it impossible to determine the origin.  The only modern advantage is some pronoun clarity when speaking about multiple things.

I believe Greek is the same way.

http://ntgreek.org/learn_nt_greek/nouns1.htm

It is based on ancient Phoenician language.

There was some influence on Latin from the Greek and Etruscan languages

And of course Spanish, French and Italian, the love languages are all based on Latin frameworks

....that's roughly a bit of what.  Why? I think is your question
