Gotta love a country where .5 billion people shit outside. 2007 I made 2, 2 week trips to Chennai for work. First trip I took about a 4 hour walk and saw a lot of dog shit on the sidewalk. And then noticed I hadn't seen a dog on the entire walk. The corporate provided drivers did not have cars with cabin filters. Covered with shit smelling dust from morning to evening until I could get a shower. Saw too many walking dead and that haunts me still. |

So what caused the rail issue? Bad steel? Over loaded trains? I will go with both. I assume the track has elongated causing it to buckle. Rail grows tremendously when it is hot. It's hard enough to keep rail on a tight, well maintained rail bed from buckling, let alone a shitty one like that where all the ties are exposed above the ballast. ETA, in the winter months in colder climates, just the opposite happens. The rail wants to shrink and often breaks. |

Yuk it up , plenty of imported engineers from India fucking shit up here as we speak. My office use to give me the office rejects to make into field engineers, not one could get anything done correctly. But, but, but they can tell all the way from India that you have viruses on your computer and for a small fee they will fix it for you. |

They need to be attached to ties that are laid on a maintained bedding. Most of the time a rail warp like that it's because of heat from the sun will twist the rail and it warps out of the spike. If the bedding isn't installed correctly it allows the rail to move and twist out of the spikes. They will just reuse the same rails. |

That would be a nightmare during an outage............as for India, don't we have a member who posted pics of India when he went there?

going with heat expansion, they need to leave gaps in the rails like they do for sidewalks You are right about the heat expansion. The problem is not that it needs any gaps (as that would cause problems of its own because of the dynamic of the rail and constant maintenance issues) but is because of an improper bed. It was hit on in a couple of posts already, but I'll elaborate a little more. If you look at any class one railroad in North America, they all use CWR (continuous welded rail) on all their main lines. That is the kind of rail shown in the OP. Good railroads keep the ties buried to the top by ballast (rock) and have a good shoulder on either side to completely covere both ends of the tie. They also bring tamping machines out periodically to keep the ballast tight. They want the dynamic pressures of the rail to be absorbed through the hardware, tie and rail bed. They also run track patrols everyday to monitor the integrity of the track. Any sign of trouble and they mobilize crews immediately to go and address the problem. A loose rail bed like in the OP will just allow the forces to move the ties around and then you have problems. |
