Lathes are fun.  I have a small one to mess around with.  Here is a segmented pen I made last year and a couple of segmented shaving sets. The pen is walnut and maple.  The shaving sets are African Blackwood and acrylic inserts.

In the comments section, he says that it's ebony and black veneer?.

Looks like a fabric of some kind to me though.  I don't know what that stuff is.
