[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Thanks Microsoft (Page 1 of 2)

| I've been ignoring the prompt to update to Windows 10 for a while. I finally did it yesterday and got an error after it took all day to download and install. I did some googling and it said try and reset. I did that and now all I get is a black screen with a cursor. I should have known better Fk Microsoft |

You need to get GWX Control Panel next time.
GWX Control Panel GWX is Microsoft's nag application that you clicked on. GWX Control Panel is a program that completely wipes it so it will never appear again to push you to upgrade. |

GWX Control Panel is a program that completely wipes it so it will never appear again to push you to upgrade. It's too late for that. It's reinstall OS time. If you have data that you need to recover, then create a USB boot disk and use that to copy your data to another USB drive before you reinstall your OS. |

| I kept messing with the fix-it tools on the recovery menu and was able to get it in some sort of safe mode. It wouldn't start when I selected safe mode but one of the other options worked. I was able to get the few folders of pictures I hadn't backed up yet on a few DVD's. I then tried 2 recent restore points and got errors both times. I tried to get back into that safe mode I was in before to wipe the video drivers and it wouldn't start up. After resetting like 8 times and trying the different recovery options it gave me a black screen that said your computer failed to start up, would you like to restore to the last time it did. I clicked ok, it did its thing and is back to normal. |

My computational device is running Win10 pro. It's buggy as hell, doesn't update anymore, hates other than win programs, and just went though the seemingly endless cycle of multi-restores to get it to work again. Win10 is the bloody wart on the anus of pc's.
Many fucks be upon Windows. |

I get a kick out of people blaming Microsoft because Win10 won't work right on their Compaq 486 box. There is a compatibility checker that's free and will tell them if their box is advanced enough to run the new version of Windows. For some reason the don't run it nor do they back up their files nor make a boot disk. Win10 is just too fool-proof for some people.

If you go into installed updates you can hunt down KB3035583 on either windows 7, 8, or 8.1. Uninstall it. open task manager and make sure GWX.exe is not running, if it is just end the task. go to C:\windows\system32\ and scroll down to GWX. Right click and then left click properties, left click the security tab, left click the advanced button, left click the owner tab, left click the edit button, select your user name or administrators if your user is an administrator and is not listed, left click apply, then left click ok all the way out of the dialogue boxes. Right click GWX again, left click properties, left click security tab, left click edit button, select your user name and set it to full control then apply and ok. Right click on GWX again, hold down shift and left click on delete. Make sure your automatic updates is set to only automatically install important updates then check for updates, you should have a new optional update with KB3035583 at the end, right click it and select hide. you have now saved yourself from the horror that is winders 10 :) It's actually not bad, I still don't have it on my gaming machine but it's on my laptop. After I turned off cortana, set all the data logging and reporting to off, removed almost all the tiles from the start menu, added in all the third party programs I need and reset all the file associations, it's not really any different from windows 7 or 8.1. 8 was a total abortion though unless you used a third party start menu. |

I regularly use 4 PCs with Win 10 on them. 3 of them were upgraded, one shipped with Win 10.
I have NO major issues with any of them. At least one of said PCs is a REALLY cheap Celeron-powered Asus Laptop. I've seen dozens of upgraded Win 10 boxes at work. Most go off without a hitch. Honestly, I'm somewhat astonished by the infrequency of problems we encounter with Win 10, especially on PCs that were upgraded in-place. It's a VERY solid OS, in my experience. |

Well, there IS a link to it on the "Upgrade to Windows 10" screen.... |

and once again, another person learns the hard lesson that installing an OS on top of an OS is NOT a good idea. Yup. Every one of my boxes I've done the "keep nothing" option and it runs great. I know better than trusting an in place upgrade. Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |

I WAS going to suggest a clean install, but I dunno if he has any restore media or not and I'm not about to suggest it if he doesn't have any. Most people don't. That's one of the reasons I refuse to work on people's malware-infested craputers any more. NOBODY has fucking restore media. Sometims you HAVE to nuke it from orbit. |

I think some of those guys are just jacking with the non-technical guys. At least the "get Apple" guys are suggesting a solution that people who have trouble with Windows might have success with. |

Quoted: They forced it on me after declining for months. I just noticed over the weekend that it turned on my camera, microphone and sharing. Fyi... Microsoft also states that reports that Windows 10 being forced on users are "not accurate” and suggests that users who seeing Windows 10 installed unexpectedly might have pre-selected to upgrade to the new operating system. A Microsoft spokesperson said in a Q&A: "We have updated the upgrade experience for some of our customers, who had previously reserved their upgrade, to schedule a time for their upgrade to take place.” Users may have also have unwittingly clicked or tapped on the ‘accept’ or ‘OK’ button, which user interface elements such as Windows Access Control and the modern trend of extensive permissions and password requests bombarding users with pop-ups demanding action, has trained users to do. |
Windows 7 is best Windows. I run whatever OS was native. When I buy a new laptop, I run what it brung. The only time I've ever put a new OS on was Windows ME . Never again. I'm due for a new laptop, and the wife's CPU just failed on hers, so I guess I'll be buying a couple soon. It looks like prices have bottomed out, though. I have a HP i5, 8GB and 500GB 14" I bought for $650 at BB 6 years ago. Hard to find that price point now for the same hardware, especially in a 14". I guess the old doubling every 2 years deal is dead.
