It was delivered today. I took it out of the box and in doing so the gimbal brace fell off. I am new to quads and I thought it was part of the packing material. I upgraded the firmware in the quad and the receiver. Only then did I read what the clear plastic brace was for. So I put it back on. Later after learning more about it, I turned it back on to check the lights and preform the compass calibration for practice so I knew how to do it tomorrow when I fly it for the first time. Problem is I forgot about the gimbal lock and left it in place. Took me about 30 seconds to remember it was on and then I shut the copter down. Does the software recognize this error or did I cause damage? After I shut it off, I cycled the copter. The camera did it's boot up where it spins around on all axis and then went to level. I picked it up and moved it up and down and left and right and it seems to track just eyeballing it. |

I went to my parent's house today to help them pack, they are on 4 acres, finally took the phantom up and recorded, the video is boring. Only took it up to about 50 feet and started to learn orientation. First two flights was I confused in each orientation, fucked it up a few times. Last two I was a lot more confident. On the second flight it lost satellite connection for about 40 seconds and I was in manual mode. It drifted about 100 feet to the left before I figured out what direction it was facing and brought it back. A few seconds later it reconnected to satellites and snapped to attention. I have much to learn. I updated to share that the gimble on the camera still works fine, the camera tracked the horizon just fine when I brought it down to 20 feet and gave harsh input in all directions, it seems no damage was done. It audibly told me that it has lost connection and that I was in manual and then said out loud when it reconnected and I saw am immediate response. I manually landed it twice and tested the auto return to home and land twice, both times on the auto it went up to 400 feet, came over the area it took off from and set down on it's own. I measured both times, of those the farthest distance from take off location to auto land was 7 feet. I will say that I can land it much softer than the auto land feature. Perhaps I am babying it and the developers know it can take more just fine. Happy with the product so far, working as advertised. Final note, they are louder than you think, sounds like a very very loud cloud of wasps. After calibration and the first take off, I gave more ground. Those props can do some damage by the sound of them. I take the props off now when I bring it inside. Dunno if that's a recommendation but it seems prudent. |
