Cornell Jr.) Newsday May 25, 2003 District Looks For a Lesson Hoping to reassure students By Katie Thomas Staff Writer May 27, 2003 In the wake of a janitor's arrest for possession of firearms and other weapons, officials at the Deer Park school district say they are cooperating with authorities and preparing to talk to students about the incident. Joseph Donato Jr., 34, of 856 Bay Shore Ave., who worked at the Robert Frost Middle School in Deer Park, was arrested Friday after Suffolk County district attorney detectives [red]searched his West Islip home acting on a tip [/red] and found illegal weapons, hate literature and other racist paraphernalia. Deer Park School Board president Michael Oddo said the board held an emergency meeting Monday to discuss how to address students' and parents' questions. "We just wanted to assure everyone that we're working with the district attorney's office and we're working with the police,” Oddo said Monday during an interview. "The district is taking all necessary steps to protect the safety and welfare of each of our students and each employee in the district.” The middle school has 1,000 students. Oddo said school district officials asked police to search two schools where Donato worked -- the Robert Frost Middle School and the 500-student John Quincy Adams Primary School, where Donato once worked as a substitute janitor. Oddo said the request "was purely precautionary.” Police did not confirm nor deny that the searches were taking place. During their search of Donato's home, detectives found one shotgun, four pistols, eight rifles, nine semi-automatic rifles, plus ammunition and several other weapons. Robert Clifford, spokesman for District Attorney Thomas Spota, said federal law enforcement authorities will help his office examine the guns to determine if Donato had converted any of them into automatic weapons. They also are trying to trace the origin of the weapons, Clifford said. Donato pleaded not guilty Saturday to two counts of fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon at his District Court arraignment in Central Islip. He is free on $2,500 cash bail. A man who answered the door at his home Monday declined to comment. In addition to the weapons, detectives also found racist paraphernalia that included an Adolf Hitler doll, a copy of "The Aryan Coloring Book,” and a Ku Klux Klan hood and robe. Detectives said Donato told them he was an active member of the white supremacist group. Oddo said Deer Park school officials will be meeting this week to decide how best to talk about the incident with students districtwide. "The building principals, I trust, will be conducting whatever they deem appropriate based on the age level in the schools,” he said. A statement explaining the district is cooperating with authorities also will be distributed to students, Oddo said. Let me preface by saying I find hate groups like the KKK and racists in general absolutely despicable. I wish I was in a position to defend this guy. I would offer him my services for free. This sounds like an illegal JBT weapons grabbing raid if there ever was one. This guy needs to sue the SCPD for everything they are worth. |

I'm just glad this arsenal of hate is off the street, thanks in no small part to the good citizen who called in the tip. If more folks were willing to step up and do the right thing, as this citizen did, we could rid this country of hate and get on with the business of providing universal health care, saving social security and protecting our environment. cynic |

Assuming that the guy has done nothing wrong and was hit as an easy target and as a DA's wet dream ("See, we got these evil weapons and an evil man off the street [i]before anything bad happened[/i]) I hope he gets a total rat-bastard go-for-the-jugular lawyer . Question #1: Isn't it odd they found 8 rifles, and 9 semi-automatic rifles, why are they only showing a few of the "military style" in the photo??? This is bad news on several levels. In addition to the fact that this dude is being demonized by the media, tainting the Jury pool before he's been tried, or any evidence presented, he's already considered guilty of the crime of owning "hate literature and other racist paraphernalia." Who gets to decide what "hate literature" is? And of course, the media and .gov are working hand in hand to paint all gun owners as "racist KKK clan members in white supremacist groups." Without knowing the intimate details, how does one conclude it was a "massively illegal search?" If the DA's office detectives obtained a warrant before the search how is it then illegal? If a tip is received about a drug lab, or someone with intent and the police do nothing, they are then liable for said inaction and the consequences of that inaction. Many searches are done on the perceived veracity of tips alone. Maybe they had a reliable informant, maybe this ass was making threats amongst friends, maybe he had plans to do worse. Maybe it's a disgruntled ex-girlfriend(or boyfriend)with an ax to grind. I'm not saying I agree with it, I'm just wondering where the illegality in it all is. Bottom line, they have him on almost nothing, and it's a feel good press conference in a news poor week. |

I would personally have said 17 rifles but in a world full of moron's some of them cannot differentiate between "Bolt Action and Semi-Automatic" rifles. The dummy grenades are illegal in several states so that is not surprising nor is the "Slap Jacks". Some of the "Knives etc." would be illegal even here in the "Woods of East Texas"! A person commits an offense if he "carries on or about his person"...knives that have a blade longer than 5.5" or is double edged...etc. I can own them but I can not carry them.
