| I know there's already a 100-page thread on the shooting, but did police in Orlando really wait 3 hours before making entry? Don't mean to take anything away from the brave first responders, but damn that seems like a long time in this type of scenario. Am I crazy or missing something??? |

Early reports said he had explosives. He had stopped shooting, so they tried negotiating as an attempt to keep him from blowing up the hostages. |

You're missing something. By the time LE arrived on scene, the situation had transitioned from an active shooter incident to a barricaded subject/hostage situation. You don't immediately make entry during a hostage situation (barring a few exigent circumstances). That course of action is traditionally the last option you resort to.
There's also the whole explosives/IED issue, which apparently the shooter claimed to have. |

Based on training and experience I am betting that it will come out that he had stopped the shooting and went negotiation mode. I will guarantee the only reason they went in when they did was because he started killing again.
In the shooters mind he was prob trying to do a Beslan type op. He had no intention of ever coming out alive. The negotiation was to buy time to fortify his position to take as many out as possible when the assault finally came. |

Press conference happened about an hour ago and we have a slightly better idea as to what happened.
- At approximately 0200, shooter arrives on scene and engages the single off-duty uniformed officer at one of the entrances to the facility. A gun battles ensues after which the shooter enters the club. - Shortly after this, two on-duty officers arrive and all 3 LEOs make entry to the club. Another gun battle ensues which forces the shooter to barricade himself in the bathroom. - Suspect takes hostages in the bathroom and makes claims about possessing a suicide vest. It is at this point the 3 initial officers pull back and call for SWAT/EOD/Negotiators. |
