Optic & Light are necessities for me..may as well have a light wt free float rail and good barrel for accuracy to while you're at it...
and a nice stock a perfect grip an improved trigger....other than that keep it simple....

Is it wrong that I want one of those?

Every time I get what I think will be a beater rifle I then grow to like it and end up not treating it as such. Maybe, finally, a Hi Point will be the gun I can treat like a dirty gutter slut.

Great looking gun.  I've looked at building something similar several times, but other things keep getting in the way.

Not an A1 upper.

Nice Colt 723 clone though.

Needs a notched large button forward assist to be complete.

It is a good looking carbine.  Growing up and attending the gun shows at the Santa Clara Co fairgrounds in San Jose, I used to drool over the CAR 15 clones people were making out of Colt SP1 ARs.

There's just something appealing about those graceful round handguards and smallish original pattern CAR buttstock (yes, I realize this is a fibrite type; still it's an attractive, compact design).

The first two thousand M16A2s were delivered to ITS East and West back in 1984, and they had those larger pattern forward assist plungers (they also had M16A1 style ejection port covers).  Damned if they didn't tear the hell out of my and others trigger fingers when training with the rifle on the bayonet assault course.  The problem was noted, and Colt sent some engineers to Camp Pendleton to look into the problem.  They solved it by producing a smaller "button" on the plunger.  Not sure if it was exactly like the one you have pictured, but it was close.

They made two of them, a full round for rifles with an A1 profile lower and a notched one (as pictured) for the A2 profile lowers.

I could be totally wrong on this, but I recall the plungers on those early 'A2s having a round notch, and not a straight cut.

That was over 30 years ago, so my memory may be failing me.

There's something reassuring about good old fashioned simplicity in an AR world gone eccentric.

Not lamenting the latter.
