I had a thread a while back where I was making multicam handle material for a Busse knife that I ended up abandoning because I over sanded the handles. I hadn't done a whole lot with the homemade "micarta" in a while, but a couple months ago I found out about some new players in the benchmade scale game.  Specifically for griptilians, which require some internal milling that makes it a no go for me at home. I emailed a couple guys and the one who said he'd take on the project was Ryan, AKA DeathOfAllThings (or DOAT) on the forum scene.  Anyways, I sent him a rectangular slab and in return I got this...

It looks a little fuzzy (I may try to smooth it out which would darken it a bit), but its super grippy and solid.  What makes this project so cool (to me at least) is that I bought this knife shortly before heading to Afghanistan in 2011.  Sometime over there I did the ghetto "wave" mod to the blade.  And now it wears handles made from uniforms that I wore over there.

Anyway, two more pics for kicks...

That looks awesome.

Leave it fuzzy.  I've made a number of canvas micarta knife handles and they're pretty when all polished and shiny . . but slicker than snot.  I usually wind up having to rough them up to add some grip.

+1 on leaving it rough, I wish all composite handles were made that way.

Nice knife!

That's awesome looking. Now I gotta find some new scales for my grip. Thanks a lot!

That's awesome.

The Griptilian in this pic was my first Benchmade. I bought it at Ft Hood before deploying to Iraq in 2006. The background in the shadow box is from one of my uniforms. You're idea is way better than mine!

I like it, wonder if they do diagonal cuts?

I've never seen anything from him with any texture, but you'd have to ask to be sure.

That looks awesome. I dunno if I could stop using this knife though. We're you issued the auto? Our BN didn't get us anything cool like that. We got some multi tools and strap cutters. Yay.

Issued. I also got a Gerber Off-road Survival kit too. It came with a D cell Maglite, mulitool, hatchet, saw and some other stuff.

Any idea how it will wear over time if I leave it fuzzy? I know micarta will darken with oils from our skin, but any chance the "fuzz" will hold nasty stuff or stain? I'm thinking about polishing to get it knocked down then back up a grit. I don't want shiny that's for sure.

It should darken and smooth out with use.
