I didn't watch the video. I am lucky though as a local man Owns and Flies a P-51. I live in the flight path. So, I get to hear it live. You always know when Scooter is out and about. The house shakes a little. I drop what I am doing an always run outside. You should watch the video. |

Fascinating all those individual actions, machines, test jigs people. All done with no computers, cnc etc Staggering to me.such an industrious nation and we all drive German cars :( I was born in England. The intense pussification of GBR over the years is staggering. Most of Europe for that matter. But that is for another thread. |

Cant disagree with you that the 2800 has a sound that makes me smile. My favorite radial sound is the R-4360. |

There is an outside chance that my mother and her sister are in that video.
They both worked as assemblers at Rolls Royce building Merlins from 1940-45. Somewhere outside of London. They bussed in to the factory and worked 2 or 3 week shifts , stayed in a dorm type setting. Came home for a week and then back to work. My aunt started there in 1940, mom came onboard in 1943. Cool video OP |

Modern technology is nice and all, but there is something special about that period where more power meant add cylinders. What's mind blowing to me is the level advancement from say 1920 through the end of WW2. The weapons, engines, machines, and such that we made were and still are mindblowing. Tanks that went 60mph and could slice through inches and inches of armored steel, jet engines, 2100+hp engines with multiple supercharger stages. Jeeps by the tens of thousands that still are pretty nice to have. The list goes on and on. An absolute jaw dropping era. |

Probably my favorite Top Gear episode involves a Merlin Engine inside a Bentley roadster... And a BMW 46-liter V-12 engine from an Heinkel He-111 Bomber inside a monster, called "Brutus". https://i.ytimg.com/vi/xzt_E90i0ho/hqdefault.jpg Much to the horror of Jeremy. I love those TG episodes. |

Cool video OP Now that is awesome! You have any stories from them? Yes, several. Mom is the youngest of 3 girls, 2 were war brides. Mom was destined to marry and move to Texas but the young fellow she was engaged to was shot down and killed over Germany. He was a B-17 pilot. She never dated after losing him until she came to Canada and met my father (RCAF), funny how that worked out. Bombing raids and partying, and the demise of a German fighter pilot who was shot down and parachuted to what he thought was safety. To this day mom does not feel bad about her part of the party that skewered the guy. |

About the only thing I'd compare the sound of a Warbird to (in terms of awesomeness) is a Top Fuel car. But that's just me Quoted:
