My girlfriend (Alexa won't allow me to post a photo) has had one since Amazon brought it out. She uses it for weather, news, music, ect. The most she uses it for is grocery shopping. You tell Alexa what to put on the list as you use food up, or plan out the shopping list. The list goes to an app on your iPhone, and as you get the items, you delete from the list. Alexa will also tell you when your Amazon order will arrive. GF also has a lamp plugged into a wall outlet. GF can turn on the light from her car port outside her condo, or from my front porch 1700 miles away from Fort Myers where she lives.
Alexa does't understand many raunchy words from what I've determined. |

A significantly less capable Siri. LOL Apple Zombie dropped the balls he was fondling preparatory to gargling them to chime in! I have one that's still in the box after the buying frenzy last year...damn you, arfcom! ![]() Do you have both an iPhone and this Amazon gadget? Have you used them both? If you have, you would see that what I said is exactly accurate. In my experience using them both, the Amazon "digital assistant" is useful, but with much less capability. |

Im surprised they don't give em away.

I got my wife one for Christmas, as she is quite the techno-junkie and gadget freak. Now the damn thing listens in on conversations and can turn the lights on and off in the house. It's creepy. I'm convinced Skynet has become self aware. Nah, Skynet is still dumber than my dog... but it's learning.... |

So far, I'm more disappointed in the things it doesn't/can't do than enamored by what it can do... Examples?? I assumed (didn't research, it was a gift) it would be more internet based. I thought I'd be able to access databases like wiki, IMDB, stocks, etc. I didn't realize there are specific news outlets, sports, etc. to choose from. I guess I assumed it would be more of an open platform; more like surfing the web only the audio version.. |

Got two. Wife and I love them. Music, sports scores, news, weather, alarms/timers, etc. and they also allow us to control a number of smart devices around the house...all using voice commands. We are starting to resent things we can't talk to.
And if you think an Echo is the first thing in your house listening to you, I've got news for you. |

Depending on what you want it for it can be awesome or a waste of money. my mom got me one, it sits in my kids room where it serves as their alarm clock and plays music when they clean up. sometimes they ask it to tell jokes. that's the about the extent of use I get out of it. |

i've got 2...nice to be able to turn off all the lights in the house with a couple of words...have it tied into my sonos setup..can't really do much now other than turn on/off specified sonos devices..but it works well for me since I have it start playing a siriusxm channel...I find them damn useful.
ETA: also use it to order shit off amazon...toliet paper, deodorant etc. |
