Hey guys. I have a surface 3 LTE that is connected to the Verizon network. It draws off data from my phone plan. I can manually switch back and forth between WiFi and Verizon network but I am curious if there is a way to have it automatically select WiFi over broadband to save data?
Also, I am still looking for a decent email client app that I can use for my Gmail account and possibly my work accounts. Any advice on a decent app? Any other must have aps I should download? Thanks |

Can't help with the LTE/Wifi switch (though I'd imagine it'd use wifi the second you connect to it?)
Does the built in Win10 email client not work for you? It works just fine for me on my Surface 3 Pro...Gmail as well as MS mail (hotmail) and my own personal IMAP account. It's not perfect and it's missing some features but for a light client it works just fine... |

Uncheck "connect automatically" on your cellular connection so you have to manually connect to it. Check "connect automatically" on your wifi connections. not exactly what you're asking to have happen, but probably the best you're going to get.
Tried Thunderbird for email? |

You can designate the verizon connection as "metered" to prevent it downloading large files. This is a trick people use to prevent downloading updates. I'm not sure how it decides what to download. Here's a link:

Thanks for the replys everyone. I am running windows 8.1 I haven't upgraded due to so many people bashing windows 10. I have not tried the Microsoft email client nor thunderbird. I'll look for those settings. 8 has some advantages on Surface - I liked that you could swipe backwards on web pages, etc. That functionality was removed from 10 But...there's some advantages to 10 as well - 8 is a dead end, basically. 10 has a bunch of updates, and it's really not terrible, especially on a Surface. If only they kept the swipe ability in the new web browser, I'd like it a lot more...but, win some, lose some. |

Can you set the LTE connection as a metered connection? If so, it would always use it AFTER any unmetered (WiFi) connections, wouldn't download big updates over it, etc. http://www.howtogeek.com/226722/how-when-and-why-to-set-a-connection-as-metered-on-windows-10/ As for the email client... Outlook is still one of the best email clients out there. It works with Gmail, Hotmail (Outlook.com), work (Exchange) accounts, etc. You can subscribe to Office 365 for about $10/month or $100/year. Then you get all of the other Office apps, cloud storage, etc., too. |

Thanks The WiFi radio has a higher priority metric than the LTE radio, it should automatically switch to WiFi when you come into range of a known/saved WiFi network. The built-in Mail app is a joke. Outlook is good and the newer versions are fairly touch-friendly. I don't know how far Thunderbird has come in that regard. If your device has 4GB RAM, I would seriously consider moving to Windows 10. It's better in almost every way over 8.1, but I wouldn't recommend it on 2GB RAM. |

I would have to look that up. Only reason I have not upgraded is I read some bad stuff about Win10 and security. |

This is what it was listed as : Microsoft Surface 3 128GB, 4GB RAM In that case I would upgrade. There's a program called Anti-Beacon from the people that make the Spybot anti-malware app.. it's good at disabling as much or as little of the Win10 telemetry as you want. With that being said, if you have ever had problems with battery life, Windows crashes, app problems, updates not installing right.. the telemetry is what helps us fix it. Consider leaving basic reporting on.. it's not personally identifiable, we don't care what kind of porn you look at or what your SSN is, but it does help us to make positive changes. |
