So I might be traveling to Austria and Germany in about a month and wanted to know if anyone has any cheap suggestions for using a cellphone. I currently use AT&T, but the only plan I can find is an additional $60 which only gets me 300mbs of data and $0.50 a minute talk.

Any suggestions on what to do?

I have a Verizon Iphone which does not have a sim. I signed up for International service with Verizon while we travelled. That plan included 300mbs of data. Blew through that in about 5 days. Free wifi is scarce in Germany. You may want to look into just buying a sim card when you get there.

Wifi is your friend.

If you are going to be where there is no wifi, you will be needing some additional plan to get costs down.

Lots of wifi communication options/apps to use that gets you away from data or call charges.

Are you planning on calling home, or more for intra euro calls?  You can buy a prepay phone in country.

What phone do you have? Most AT&T phones will work in Europe and you can buy a local SIM card if you are going to make a lot of calls.

Get your phone unlocked and buy a sim card when you get there. Email whoever you need to contact beck here your new number. Phone service is better when it comes to price and selection overseas, US companies are dicks and rape their customers.

This is what I did for usage in Germany, Austria and Switzerland last September..

1) used my no contract note 4, t-mobile model that I use on att

2) purchased t-mobile regular unlimited service... gives you unlimited data in europe... 3g, but it was decent speed.

3) canceled t-mobile when I came home

By far the cheapest option unless you want to mess around with buying a Sim in Europe. I also forwarded my calls from att to t-mobile while I was there... phone calls are not free back to the US, but if you really need it, it's there..

It's the data plan I really wanted...and t-mobile is all over Europe since it's a German company.

Rather than use her company issue AT&T iphone 5C last month, my wife took my unlocked T Mobile iPhone 5 with her to London, for a 10 day trip with sister and nieces.

Shortly after arrival, she walked in and got a prepaid O2 sim card from Carphone warehouse for 10 pounds, which gave her 250 minutes and 4gb of data for a 30 day period.

1. Buy yourself a cheap 4-band unlocked GSM phone, such as this one:

http://www.amazon.com/LG-A275-Black-Unlocked-QuadBand/dp/B009IRGQPO

2. When you get to your destination, buy a local SIM card with prepaid minutes.

3. Install SIM card in phone and you're GTG.

This is by far the cheapest and most reliable way to do it. Forget international (traveling) calling with U.S. carriers.
