Stupid ass should have died for doing this. Clearer video at the end. ![]() |

Was there a guy wire or something back there? Can't tell what he snagged.
ETA: NVM. Diagram on news link explains it. Seems like the pilot shouldn't have put his aircraft in that situation and the rigging man on the ground lost his bearing as well. Christmas-time dumbfuckery is the short answer. |

Video as posted a while back. I think they were using the helicopter to raise the towers. The helicopter hit a cable. Someone will be along shortly to give the whole story I think. Quoted:

Holy cow, that sound. What were they trying to do? Video as posted a while back. I think they were using the helicopter to raise the towers. The helicopter hit a cable. Someone will be along shortly to give the whole story I think. Yeah, Iirc the cable used to sling the tower to the helicopter was attached improperly and would not release. When the ground guy reached up to grab the cable it pulled the cable into the rotor causing the crash. |

In the first shot you can see the tether under the chopper. In the slo-mo at the end you can clearly see the rotor clip the tether. This is why you don't tether a chopper to something taller than the chopper-- he should have pickled the line before he tried to land-- my take on this anyway. (I am not a pilot.)

Mathematically, catenary problems are not trivial and require careful analysis to solve ... or you can just look out the fucking window if the math proves too hard.
Between the twang of the cable strike and whine of the turbine, those are some awesome sounds! I mean, I wouldn't want to hear that stuff too often, but every now and then those sounds serve as a good reminder of what happens when things go oops. |

Yep, about 26 seconds into that video, you can see the dumbass jump up and grab the cable. Totally not the pilot's fault. |

This Archived Thread talks about the same accident.
Although the videos are no longer available on YouTube, the discussion is good. ETA: here is a slow motion of the same crash:

Quoted: You know they make cranes for jobs like this, perhaps that is what they should have used. The tower was only 25m tall why use a helicopter? A heli can fly in, hook up and do the job while billing only a few hours. Cranes have to be driven there and back not even counting doing the actual work. |

How does he resolve this problem? or how does the solution presented make this his fault? Did he rig the line? Who ever rigged the line is at fault if improperly rigged or if it was just a failure then shit happens and why we carry insurance. A better plan would have been to send a MFer up that tower to release the cable from the other end or cut it.. But who knows how much time they actually had or if the tower was secure enough to climb. Not like that bird was gonna just hover there forever. but i am just a printer repair dude. |
