I live in an area filled with Democrats. One of my neighbors is a State Senator and votes along the Democrats' party line, to include limiting gun rights.
I just had a conversation with her and invited her to go shooting with me. I was thinking taking a 22LR, 10/22 or M&P22-15, with reactive targets as well as an AR if she's not too freaked out after shooting the 22. Suggestions? |

Bring the 10/22 and the M&P22-15 so you can explain how they shoot the same way, even though many want one banned.
Shoot n See targets, close distances and good ear pro are all helpful for newbies. Explain the rules of firearms safety at home before you go, reemphasize them on the range. Go when the range isn't busy. Lots of people/gunshots distract and sometimes freak out new shooters. Good luck! |

Good luck! Pretty much this. I'd stick with 10 rd box mags for the 10/22, even if you have higher cap mags. |

Lots of ear and eye protection, and be as low key as possible. It is often the enthusiasm of firearms owners that frightens newbies. Low key, very safety conscious, and fun would be the way to go. Avoid really loud, sharp recoiling items. I even recommend double ear protection. Make the targets easy to hit...something like 12" round targets at 50 yards from a bench rest so she realizes success early on. Avoid humanoid and animal targets.

If there's time to casually work these points in though, I would. Make sure she sees how much more powerful "deer" rifles are than ARs. Point out how the deadliest school shooting was VaTech, and done with a couple pistols to a room full of able-bodied young adults, and that the shooter was able to reload several times and used several 10 rd magazines. That it's crime victims that actually benefit from larger magazines because they're often outnumbered, surprised, and behind the curve in reacting to an assault, might be at home in their underwear without spares, or trying to fit a carry pistol into comfortable daily dress without stuffing pockets or trying to hide spares everywhere. That cops carry full capacity pistols and AR-15s and spare mags on patrol for defense under the same laws by which civilians can defend themselves and others, but they get vests and OC and batons and often have the luxury of backup and picking the approach, whereas the victim has the approach picked against them. If she brings up armor piercing ammo, explain that AP pistol ammo is already banned and has never been used to pierce a cop's vest, and the vests are designed against common pistol calibers, not rifles, and that ALL (CF) rifle calibers will penetrate a patrolman's vest, it's just physics and a practical tradeoff of weight and flexibility. These are points I NEVER hear articulated in debates or TV discussions and they really speak to the practical fallacies of the laws libs push; it might be stuff she hasn't ever processed. |

Nice man! My wife and I took someone to the range for her first time this Sunday, who was very anti gun. She was jumpy when she first got there, but we got her set up with some good ear protection and she seemed to have a good time. She shot a few magazines through our M&P22c, but didn't want to shoot our ar's but did pose like she was shooting (it's something lol). All in all it was a pretty good experience for her, and we didn't push her to do anything she didn't want. She posted her picture on facebook and her parents responded with "WTF?!?", and I saw there convo and she invited them with her when she goes again. Her dad runs for county commissioner, so it's somewhat related to your story. |

Funny how our government always forgets that the second is the only amendment that uses the term "Shall not be infringed" they did that on purpose. |
