Not chrome, but I'm still pretty confident that this is the right path to Valhalla.

Nice.

I need to do some this weekend now that the weather is better.

Yeah, I love the smell of hot metal, the ka-thunk as they drop clear of the mold.

A little tumble lube and I'm set for a couple months.  I did roughly 400 today.

Lyman 452460.  200gr.  Doesn't go through ingots quite as fast as the 44 cal Keith bullets, but quick enough.  I get about a dozen drops before I have to crank on the heat to get ready to feed the pot and flux.

Nice.......I have a bunch of lead that I want to turn into .490 round balls for my muzzle loader......

Was expecting a Firefly thread, with pics of hot spacegals.

But I'm not totally disappointed.

I'm just getting into this, planning on casting 9, 40, 45, and .308 for blackout.

I'm now amassing my lead collection and have about 200 lbs of wheel weights to melt down this weekend.

OP, do you do any powdercoating of your shineys? From what I understand that removes the lead fowling issue.

I have only tinkered with it using a HF powdercoat gun and a little convection toaster over (convection is a MUST).  They shoot good, and I like it in concept, but it adds some time.  So I don't do it for pistols, and only for fat rifle calibers (long skinny bullets are hard to stand up on a tray and get into the oven).  It wouldn't surprise me though if someone's found a clever and easier way to do it en-mass.  I just haven't looked into it in a year.

So I tumble lube when I can (bullets that don't need a GC or need to be sized), otherwise, lubrisize.  Most of what i cast is pistols with 50/50 wheelweights.  For rifles or magnum pistol, I use more like a 2:1 wheelweight alloy and drop them in water.

I stopped casting in '84 but still have tons of lead I scavenged.

Some hard and ready to cast and some dead soft virgin.

What's the market on it ?

I can still find buckets of wheelweights for $20 or less (so 100lbs).  The going rate for ingots is around $2/lb; there's always lead on the castboolits site selling at $1.50.

There is something oddly satisfying about melting metal.

It's kinda pretty.

120 lbs of cleaned lead, not bad not bad at all.

I have to smelt my pure lead yet, but I am kind of enjoying this so far.
