I want to get some tire chains for my truck that I can use in a pinch when I go hunting in the winter. However, they're not really a common thing around here and I'm just wondering if anybody knows any specific brands or types that work good and where to get them?

Mainly I had issues this year with our first major snow storm causing a layer of ice on top of soft/muddy ground and then a few inches of snow on top of that. Basically if I ran into any type of incline I had a hell of time keeping traction. I'm not doing any major offroading but most the places I hunt are accessed on gravel/dirt roads or parking in the ditch. I figure keeping a set of chains in the truck might help in these situations.

They have a quite a few different styles of chains, which ones should I be looking at for my intended application?

If you are only going to use them on occasion, you can get by with the cheapo Walmart ones.

I have actually used them a fair bit.

If you are planning on using them more than a few times per season, spend the money and
get some decent ones.  I don't have brands of choice, however I plow with them and spend the
money on a high quality chain.

I buy mine from a local quality parts store and I think they run about $150 per set.

Our last chains were bought, I believe, from TireChains.com.  For a Tundra mostly on roads (think winter passes) we bought Onorm Diamond, and a similar type for our trailer.

For my Tacoma, used to get into the middle of nowhere in the winter, I have V_Bar Heavy Duty "old style" chains for the back and the lighter diamond style for the front.  Chained up that little truck has gone through some nasty deep snow/ice.

I got Diamond Chains from tire chains.com a few years back for all four wheels. They work great in snow.
