[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Verdun (Page 1 of 7)

Wow. I just finished up listening to Dan Carlins' Hardcore History podcast covering WW1 and it was insanely good. Spends a lot of time on Verdun and the background leading up to the war. Can't recommend enough. WW1 was just other worldly. I listened to this in it's entirety a few months back, it was absolutely amazing. Really made the day to day existence in the trenches tangible to the reader/listener. Guy is a great story teller. |

"They shall not pass". Sad, sad event for the loss of so many troops on both sides. It seems that Europe exhausted itself so fully in these wars that the repercussions are still felt today. I don't think Hitler could have brain washed the kids so easily if so many fathers weren't killed in ww1. All these boys growing up looking for father figure and suckered in by the nazis. I think any politician who is involved in a war should be forced to spend time away from their beds and families on the front lines. wars need to be fought with everyone on the same page. |

I agree, politicians children nieces and nephews should get draft card # 1. |

France's Stalingrad "They shall not pass" Slightly off topic, but. not one step back. The comparison is very appropriate. |

And it's ironic Hitler did serve on the front lines. Twisted fuck. |

WWI is probably the most important single event in all human history. It really doesn't get the attention it deserves. |

That's the basic plot of the Pink Floyd - The Wall album. Interesting. |

I can hardly imagine the resolve these countries, and the actual people on the front lines/homefront had at the time. The losses and destruction was staggering. It is a worrying thought to me that in these cases, authoritative regimes have shown that they can, and will, bleed their people dry in pursuit of their objectives. |

Old BBC documentary (1964 It was just all so stupid, just the titles of the BBC documentary episodes makes for depressing reading - Hell Cannot Be So Terrible - For Gawd's Sake Don't Send Me - It Was Like the End of the World - The Hell Where Youth and Laughter Go - Only War, Nothing But War - Surely We Have Perished The fact that it wasn't completely overshadowed by the devastation of WWII, even so soon after the war (less than twenty years between these BBC docs and the end of WWII) speaks volumes. |

Absolutely no doubt. The destruction in Europe from both wars passed the torch of western culture to the United States, where it briefly flourished... |

I've been there. The unddulating ground is evidence of the artillery bombardments that place endured. Also saw the spot where only the tops of the bayonets are showing - the soldiers clutching the rifles are still down there.
You'd think that we would have learned by now the horrors of war and how to avoid it. |

If the French would have just given up Verdun and retreated to the forest behind it.
They would have tripled German losses. But, I understand that giving up the fortress, would have been an embarrassment. I think the German commander said. "We will bleed them white" He damn near did. |

But can you really consider the French government at the time to have been an authoritarian regime? Certainly, the USSR under Stalin is the epitome of an authoritarian regime. Would the US and its allies do the same thing today in the face of a conventional war with China and/or Russia? |

I wonder how far WW1 set civilization in reverse. Apparently, prior to WW1, it was a very optimistic and good time to be alive. Shit, one good illustration is that very respected guy who said prior to WW1, that a global war couldn't happen because of how great inter-commerce between nations had become. |
| Inside the Douaument Ossuary lie the bones of 130,000 unidentified KIA. |

Been there. The feeling you get is really hard to put into words. To put the scale of losses in the First World War in perspective, on the first day of the First Battle of the Somme the British had over 19000 men killed (total casualties close to 60K). As a percentage of the population this would be equivalent to 85K American soldiers killed in one day. The Vietnam Memorial only has 58K names on it. |

Been there. The feeling you get is really hard to put into words. There was a busload of young French military trainees or maybe a military school class there when I visited. The looks on their faces told me a lot about the politics of France after 1918. The Ossuary is not like Arlington. The Ossuary is a warning. |
