I received an email from the bank today saying my new debit card is in the mail and it has a chip in it.  What RFID blocking wallet is the best to get or is it even necessary?

Most credit card chips are not RFID, if you cannot "touch to pay" ie "you have to insert it into the machine", its not RFID, nothing to block

It blocks RFID chips like the ones in rewards cards or your work badge

Heavy duty reynolds wrap around your credit card.   This is the best.

If your credit card has an array of contacts on it and must be inserted into a reader it is not RFID.

Credit Union guy said one is needed to protect the card.  However the bank is responsible for any bad purchases.
I fixed the title spelling.  Happy now.

It is if it actually is an RFID card.

Credit union guy is very likely wrong.  Kinda like getting advice from a gun store.

As has been said, if it looks like this:

there's nothing to worry about.... it isn't RFID and can't be read without inserting it into a contact reader.

If it says "pay pass" on it or something that looks like this:

then get an RF blocking sleeve.

There's a good chance that your bank sent you your new card in an RF blocking sleeve.  Just put the card in your wallet inside the sleeve and pull it out of the sleeve when you need to use it.  Been doing that for almost a year myself.

Wrap in aluminum foil and leave in kitchen drawer, use credit card for everything and pay off in full at end of the month.

^^What he said. IIRC the one and only "myth" that the mythbusters were prohibited by corporate / advertisers (banks / card networks) from doing an episode on was the ease with which RFID cards can be remotely read.

There are some credit cards that have RFID chips in them. It seems (from my sample size of about 3 cards) the industry is backing away from RFID though. Several of my cards that were re-issued at one point with RFID have since been re-issued without (but with the chip for inserting into the machine).
