Not sure how this happened, but my money is on texting and driving. We had a local deputy total a tahoe with 300 miles on it yesterday. rolled it by a bridge. http://www.alicetx.com/storyimage/TX/20160218/NEWS/160219310/AR/0/AR-160219310.jpg&MaxW=650 Only ones professional enough to be exempt from texting laws and have laptop running in the car ...

Looks like a lot of blood on the inside of the windshield for a broken arm. Compound fracture? While I am not stating a pro/con opinion of the idea, I am surprised that accidents involving texting/distracted driving have not gotten DUI like penalties attached to them. If you did this while drunk you would be looking at a potential felony charge (DUI with accident/bodily injury). |

That would be really funny if they decided to ticket him. Fucker should pay for damage to the construction site too.I really wish the US would issue Autobahn type rules here. You damage public property such as guard rails, poles, or structures if the accident was the result of your actions... you pay for it to be replaced. |

If an accident does any significant damage to one of our power poles or other equipment, we bill the responsible party for the cost of repairs. Not sure if they count as public property, though. |

I'm not sure how it is in other states but in Michigan you have to. It's billed under the property protection insurance we are required to carry. I'm not sure if the insureds ever get the bill because it's sent right to the insurance company to pay. (I work for an insurance company) |

I've seen them enforced, too. VDOT will send you a bill and the AG's office will sue you if you don't pay it. The Autobahn-style rules that we need are the ones that involve disciplined, distraction free, well-trained driving as the legal and cultural norm. With draconian consequences for deviations. Like this guy, for example, would never have a license again in his life. |

Having been through three kids now getting their DL, I am shocked and amazed at how much the standards are a joke. If you can go in, regurgitate some useless info on a written test, and then manage to not hit anything with the inspector during the road test, here ya go kid. You can now drive a car. Don't worry, it's good for life and we'll never retest you again. It's laughable. |

Good.
In the past two weeks I know of these incidents: My son got rear ended while he was sitting at a red light. Guy behind him was texting and watching traffic with his peripheral vision. Cars beside him started moving and he took off right into my sons car. Totaled it out. Same day I watch a lady come to a complete stop at an intersection while looking at her phone. She didn't have a stop sign. 3 min. later saw a city worker that was apparently texting while at a stop light. He was the last in line and everyone drove off out of sight while he sat parked in the middle of the road waiting to get hit. Co-worker witnessed the same thing that happened to my son on Saturday at the interstate exit ramp at the traffic light near my home. Honestly, it seems like it has gotten much worse since texting and driving laws were passed. People, put the fucking phone down!! |

Instead of someone holding the phone up in their normal line of sight, now they are trying to be sneaky and keeping the phone low. The law hasn't changed that. The reality is as more and more folks get smart phones and learn all the neat features like watching videos, emailing, texting and googling while you drive there are more and more distracted drivers who were barely competent when 100% of their focus was on the road. Everyone's phone beeps, dings or honks every time they get a call, text, message or email and no one can bare to wait 3 minutes to check it because it might be something important.
It'll take .gov passing laws requiring phones to be disabled when moving more than X mph to change it OR the laws for distracted driving NOT JUST texting become so severe that you can point to some dumbass and say "never do what he did kids". After a few folks lose their license for a year or have their car sold to pay the $1000 first offense fine behavior will change. I'd vote tomorrow for a mega fine for distracted driving as it's becoming a greater risk to people than drunk drivers. 1st offense w/o a fatality $1000 fine and one month suspended license. Kill someone and you get negligent manslaughter (or whatever the legal term is but not involuntary) tacked on with the additional penalties for that (after all you engaged in behavior you knew was dangerous to others). |

Sheriff officials stated that Deputy Elijah Casas, who is assigned to the Premont area, lost control of his unit however, they are unsure of the exact cause of the accident. Officials believe speed was not a factor.
According to officials at the scene, Casas rode the concrete bridge rail before his unit rolled off and landed in the ditch. http://www.alicetx.com/storyimage/TX/20160218/NEWS/160219310/AR/0/AR-160219310.jpg&MaxW=650 Maybe talking on his phone. I swear to God, not every time but damned near, I see a local sheriff's deputy drive by they have their phone plastered to their face. Gees guys and dolls get a hand free set if you have to spend that much time on your phone! |

Fucker should pay for damage to the construction site too.
