| I come home and smell very strong propane smell. I get my wife out of house and neighbors out of theres. He calls propane company and they explain they vented off 10 precent of the 500 gallon tank and left. Shit is strong enough to gag me. Tank is 25 ft from either house. Is this legal and who do i call to bitch besides propane company? |

My question is: Who is paying for the 50 gallons of propane they vented off? |

Possible risk of fire/explosion and I would think fire department is who you want to talk to ( as soon as you got kids out of house)
Besides checking for danger they would be the ones to decide if gas company was doing wrong and starting action against them if they did |
|
Quoted: Tanks can only be filled to 90% to allow for expansion. They overfilled and then vented 10%. It is heavier than air and will settle to ground and dissapate rather quickly. Just avoid open flames... ![]() |

Quoted: They are. They are trying to fix a leak socthey emptied it into the air. I would assume that is a bit dangerous considering. My question is: Who is paying for the 50 gallons of propane they vented off? We burn a lot of propane at my work. 800 gallons/day, more or less. Some of it is very high pressure - close to 15 PSI. Household pressure is well under 1 PSI (11in water column). We get leaks now and then - the wrong valve gets opened, whatever. I don't know about intentionally venting 50 gallons all at once in a residential area, but I'm sure the propane tech that vented the gas in question did not want to die so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt regarding safety. |

Never assume the best. That is what leads to bad accidents. Call the Fire Department and raise the issue. |

The ethyl mercaptan used to odorize the propane will generally linger a lot longer than the propane itself. Unless you filter the propane through snow or water. In which case the mercap strips off, and you get deordorized propane traveling through the subsurface. And then you call me and pay me lots to track it down and remediate it so you don't explode. ![]() |

Quoted: Never have lived somewhere that used on site external propane tank Is this normal procedure ? I myself would be pissed they over filled it and then be doubly pissed they came back and 'vented' off my hard earned $$ into the aptmoshphere |
|
It's normal practice...venting propane outdoors and the propane Co and all that goes with it.
Quit being a push and bitching...it will get you know where. Build a bridge. Now if it's still strong go smell the tank they vented and make sure it's not still venting. If it is call someone. The additive they put in burns your sniffer...you will have a problem for a while. |

This is the real answer. I have a fleet of pickups on propane. Its not nearly as dangerous as you think. I vented 1000 gallons one time and no fucks were given. |

| Just to let you know, I still check for leaks in my LP lines with a lighter, instead of soapy water. They released 50 gal of propane into the atmosphere. We vent 20% H2S wells into the atmosphere, for hours on end, before plugging and after flares and such have been taken off location. Way higher flash point then propane, but way more deadly inhaled. Some blew in your house and car, wow. Im not understanding the outrage I guess. |

If my kids get sick because of this shit I will be doing more than bitching. I already chewed their asses for not letting us know. We could have taken measures to prevent so much from getting in the house and cars. People that do shit like this without regard for others deserve whatever they get. This aint a farm. 2 houses were within 25 ft of this shit. I've held a hazmat tech level cert in the past. Don't tell me this is not dangerous in the space they did it in without notifying the adjacent dwellings. A good cloud of that shit ended up in my house. Quoted:

| No expert here, but my understanding is that propane is heavier than air. A guy I know has a propane heated pool. The guy came to fill the tank and there was a leak of some sort and the propane settled into a low spot in the backyard. Something ignited it and the guy filling the tank was burned pretty badly. The heavy smell may have been because the propane didn't disperse. |

Tanks can be configured several different ways. |
