I am curious to see what kind of gun safe you guys would suggest. Being a noobie to the safe thing, I went to a couple local gun shops today and picked up a few manufacture catalogs, but honestly they're a little confusing, don't list prices, and don't tell me what I need to know. Here's my situation: 1.) I'm renting my house. I don't want to move a safe that weighs a ton when I will probably be moving out when the lease expires in October. I've heard about local safe companies that will deliver safes when you buy them (and have moving services), but is it typical that you could buy some sort of warranty so they could come move the safe when/if you have to move out in the future? Are safe moving fees outrageous? Obviously it would vary by business, but I am just wondering what's typical and what to expect. 2.) I have 3 rifles (with a 4th on the way), and 4 pistols. I want something that will hold what I have now, not be too big, but still give me room to expand my gun collection, and hold plenty of accessories. Obviously I'd stash other small things worth cash in it as well, but I don't want nor need something ungodly huge. I want it to stash my guns, keepsakes, etc., not need its' own room. There's also the possibility of having to move back into an apartment...My point is its size has to be within reason, I don't own my own home just yet. 3.) I'm not looking to break the bank, I'm not Joe Millionare. My ideal price would be between $500.00-$1k (well ideal price would be free, but you know what I am saying =) ) . Yes, I am aware that quality safes cost a grip (I saw a few today for $2,500.00, and tons more for just a bit less), but I don't need the biggest and baddest, and the less I spend the better. Something robbers, my psycho brother and his girlfriend, and my future kids can't get into. I was tipped off by someone regarding Zanotti safes, which seem extremely sweet. Any suggestions or advice? Thanks for your time guys. Gun_Shot |

I own a Liberty with double fire protection. The safe itself is beautiful and I paid I believe $1600.00 on sale. Unless you have three more guys to help you move it you will have to hire professional movers for your moving. My safe weighs 980lbs empty. I shopped for a month if not longer and they were the one of the nicer looking, and not really that much out priced by the other cheaper brands. I looked at a Browning that was not as nice as the Liberty, but $350.00 higher. Hope this helps a little. Welcome to the site. [beer] |

I have a Fort Knox passed down to me from my father, he bought it in 1981 and it weighs a ton, not to mention is 6 feet high. I have moved it several times, both by myself and with help. The last time I moved it from one location to another, I paid the local gunshop guys to do it. It was $70, and they have all the equipment to do it. When I moved it, it recieved several scratches, etc., so I would suggest paying for the move. I recently put mine on a pedestal and did all the moving by myself, you just gotta use the levers and roller techniques and buy a couple of wood dowels to roll the safe on. |

I got a Sentry from Wallyworld last Christmas. $350. About 300 pounds, it's bolted to the floor and wall. I feel it's enough to make it too much hassle for the average burglar. OTOH, a true pro can probably get into just about anything. All a safe really does is buy time. |

I am in a similar situation to you, and I get the same answers you have gotten when I ask these questions. I do have more guns than you but I am renting, and will probably not even be here another full year. I also do not want something that weighs 1k lbs and costs $2k. Here's what I'm looking into now. Stack On Website They're not out yet, but once they are they should be pretty nice. I saw them at the SHOT show and was impressed with what they are for the price. Take a look at the AMSEC TETON series. The 6032 model weigh's 550 #'s empty, can be bolted to the floor, has fireproofing, lock, handle and color type options and a slew of other choices Dehumidifying rods, lights, pistol hooks. The safe can be converted to different combo's of shelves and gun rack's to allow for 8-14-22 positions, and as others as said will stop all but the most detemined thieves. The local Wal-Mart occaisionally has the Remington version of these on sale for $1k or less. Locally (N.Y.) delivery and placement on your location run's about $150. (Don't know if these are an apples to apples comparison, they appear to be close though.) This Delivery cost was for one boss and two gorilla's that actually hauled it down the stairs and onto a prepared cement pad with through bolt anchors into the flooring. With the pad attached the safe now weigh's in near 1000 #'s empty. Cheap and kidproof with some fire protection thrown in. Deinitely a plus if you want to keep your stuff. A must if any kiddies or snooping 'teens are in your house. |
