I am 36 years old, and have read approximately 25 books in my life.  A few weeks back, I signed up with Audible from Amazon for their audio books.  In which, I had a coupon code that provided me 3 free books over 3 months.  I used the first credit on Steven King's the Stand.  I have only listened to a few hours of that book thus far, as life has been hell recently (in the last 2 months, I have spent 36 days in the hospital).  Yet, I have also read this book as one of the ones from my collection.

In hindsight, I should have chosen a different book to listen to, just for the sake of broadening my experiences.

With my health issues, I have decided to go the audio way vs. actually reading, due to my health.  I am down to one eye, and general vision isn't that great at the moment.  Further, my memory has been negatively impacted from all the trauma my body has gone through.  Much, to the point that I cannot remember what books I have read (by title).  I am sure if I see the book (or read the synopsis) I would remember reading it.

I am in a more stable place now, since Hospice has come in to help.  I am finding that I have hours of quiet time in the evenings, while my family is sleeping.  I need some recommendations!

What I have read that that my wife has written down for me, but I think I have read more:
- Multiple Tom Clancy books
-- Teeth of the Tiger
-- Hunt of the Red October
-- Without Remorse
-- Against all Enemies
- The best military science fiction of the 20th century (this had multiple shortened versions, ie Enders Game)
- Playing for Pizza
- Rawlews Founders
- Hobbit
- Game of Thrones
- S. M, Stirling Dies the Fire
- S. M, Stirling Protectors War
- EE Knight Way of the Wolf series
- Lowell: The wrong hostage
- Ann Rice Vampire Chronicles collection
- Interview with a Vampire
- The lost fleet dauntless
- Dan Brown Digital Fortress
- Dan Brown Deception Point
- Dan Brown Da Vinci Code
- Dan Brown Angels and Demons
- David Weber Basilisk Station
- World War Z
- The Road

I really liked the Tom Clancy stuff, having 3 or 4 concurrent stories going on.  I also like the post-apocalyptic type of stories.  The Sci Fi war stuff is great as well.

I was hoping I could find an Audio book that maybe didn't have a movie made from it?  Yet, if it is a great story - please recommend it anyways.  I was just originally one of those people who went to see movies instead of reading books.  I found out that kind of ruined the book experience, even though the books have much more detail.  Just knowing the ending really puts a damper on reading the story.

Based on what I have read and liked above, can I get some recommendations?  I have 1 Amazon credit to use and wanted to make it a good one.

Thanks for reading and making the recommendation!

I assume you're using Audible? It's the ONLY way to go for audiobooks, IMO.

Larry Correia. Each and every book is good.

If you like combat stuff, try Dead Six and Swords of Exodus.o

Go ahead and grab Game of Thrones (fantasy/knights and kings fiction), but great.

If you like Clancy, Red Storm Rising is awesome.

Louis L'amour-The Last of the Breed is one of my favorite books. Very well done by the reader on audible.

Drug war fiction that I enjoy
Don Winslow-The Power of the Dog and The Cartel. Lots of action. Lots of intrigue.

Neal Stephenson's books are good too.
Cryptonomicon, ReamDe, Anathem, SevenEves

Richard Preston's The Demon in the Freezer and The Hot Zone are bone chilling true stories involving deadly viruses.

Lastly, you're in my thoughts and prayers. Sorry to hear you and yours are in dire straits.

Thank you very much!  I will pick one of these books you recommended.  I also appreciate the bump, in-case there are any other suggestions or a "MUST HAVE" that I will buy with my last credit or just pay out of pocket for.  Yet, the examples you provided and subject types look great.

thank you!

Steven Pressfield- The Virtues of War

It's a "fictionalized" work that follows the true historical conquests of Alexander the Great as experienced by Alexander. Really well done, and a thoughtful insight into the nature of Kings and war. I really enjoyed it, and it gave me a new perspective into the birth of the ancient Hellenic world, and its impact on western history.

Stephen King,  Michael Crichton, and Dan Brown stories are all 'suck you in' audiobooks. If you want to listen for free, download the overdrive app and link your library account. You can download most popular books and have several weeks to listen before they automatically return.

edit; seen you read a few of these authors already. other recommendations would be Bill Bryson, Kurt Vonnegut, George Orwell, and Hugh Howey

My name is Mark and I'm an audiobook junkie.

I get my books from the local library and rip them to my computer to listen to on my phone.

Lately, I have been using the "3M" app on my phone to listen to audiobooks from the library for free.  It's pretty awesome.

Stephen King "The Dark Tower" series.

Patrick Rothfuss "The King Killer" series. (he's still working on the third book)

Just two good ones.  There are so many.

If you can, the entire Aubrey/Maturin canon. Master and Commander the movie is loosley based on books 1-10. 20.5 books. The .5 is because Patrick O'Brian passed away writing the 21st.
I've read it twice and did the audio books once. It could easily take you a year to get through them all.

Haven't listened to it, but Gates of Fire was an awesome Pressfield book. It's about the Spartans at Thermopylae.

If you look into it, make sure it's the 12hr "Complete" edition.
There's an older 6hr abridged edition out there as well.
