My mom has recently expressed interest in exploring her genealogy.  Anyone ever use it?

Yeah. Paid $30 for a monthly fee and found out someone else had already done my whole tree. Waste of time.

Ripoff, you can find much of the same info through your own searches.

It's an awesome collaborative tool for discovering your ancestry.
The database and software running it is very sophisticated.
However, it gets very expensive to keep access to your data and your network of researchers.
You can go to your local LDS Family History Center and have access for free.
After your research, make sure you export your data to a GEDCOM file format so you can save and keep it.

Why is that a waste of your time if someone else did all the work for you?
The further back you go in your family tree, the more people you are related to, and the more likely you will find someone has already done the research.
In fact, that is the main strength of the network, connecting your family trees together.

It's almost as though they need to pay their thousands of employees.

Hmm, I get it for free.

Your whole tree?  They may have thrown a bunch of names on there but how much can they backup with source verification?

I signed up a few years ago for a trial membership.

After tracing back a few generations (most of which I already knew) I ended up at Ellis Island.

From there the record tracing back in Europe was about to get very expensive so I canceled my trial membership.

I could have joined some site for free being LDS but I didn't know about it ahead of time. Most of the stuff on my tree had government paperwork that was photographed. I didn't care to go too far back.

I wanted a fun side hobby. Not a few hours worth of reading someone elses work.

Is that the geneology website that is essentially building a DNA database?

Yeah. Supposedly they are doing cheap dna testing so they can find some lost heirs of certain royal bloodlines or something.

My wife uses it, for hours a day. I loathe it.

I'm so sick of hearing about family trees of my friends or my family.

But, she enjoys it, loves it.  So I wouldn't dare get rid of it. It's her hobby/passion.  Just not mine.

Wife's been using it and Family Tree Maker for well over 10 years.
Says it's fine.

It's almost as though they need to pay their thousands of employees.
It's the Mormon Church.  They've already got more money than God.

spent a week or so on it.  traced my dad's people back to lillehammer, norway in the late 1700s, but didn't want to pay the fee for further international records.  mom's side of the family immigrated more recently and included americanized name changes, so i didn't make any headway past my maternal grandfather.

did find out that dad's side has a substantial family plot in nebraska.  hope to make a pilgrimage, just to say thank you.

Go to a local library and locate the genealogy club and let them do the research.  Those old people eat that stuff up and many libraries have accounts with ancestry.com and it's free to you.
