The biggest mistake was being outside of his hotel room at 0300....

There's all kinds of people walking around savannah at that hour. Most are tipsy, but not all.

He could have had a few. Doubt we'll ever know for sure. Bad guy had the drop on him and he went for it anyway and lost. Seems like a situational awareness fail. Similar to the guy on here who had friends get robbed by guys hiding behind a dumpster in Virginia Highlands in Atlanta.

I am sick of this crap happening in Savannah. It's about to ruin everything.

At 3am the bars are all closed. Everyone is on their way somewhere. It was really cold last night, so I don't think many people were milling about outside. Seems like this guy was just roaming hotels and found a target of opportunity.

Hotel in question.

If you like hookers knocking on your door and crack heads hanging outside than this is your place.  I made a mistake while in town for a meeting to try this place out being cheap.  What mistake. I wonder why the city of Savannah allow this place to stay open. I found this on line and since it was so close to downtown; were I had meeting's at the trade center I wanted to book it but no web site.  I called them and asked how can I reserve a room the guy with a middle eastern accent said they do not book room's or have a web site. I asked if he have any available room on March 9; he laughed and said that they rent room's until they soldout. I asked if the rate on the city of Savannah tourist info is correct he said they have weekly daily and hourly rate's. I was so stupid not to catch the last word he said and ask if address is correct and he said yes. I arrived there late afternoon pulled up to this place and made sure I had the right address. This is the place. Found the front desk ( you have to drive inside the Alamo like Santa Anna) walked inside smelled like burnt garlic and smoke I told him I am the gentleman you spoke to over the phone he said yes. He said he have rooms but he think it is best I go back downtown and find another hotel because the people who rent from him are ether homeless or hookers that use the rooms. Long story short do not be cheap and stay away from any hotel crossing that small bridge under the big bridge

yeah, well.. they're not wrong. That's not the downtown area of bay street either. West bay street is most definitely the hood.

Hope he'll be okay, but sounds like he got rolled by his hooker or drug dealer.  Alternatively, could have shot himself while being stupid and blamed it on a made up assailant.  In any event, this story is missing some moving parts.

Second part is the first thing that came to my mind, shot himself and made up the story.
