| What do you guys think of the new Jeeps? Thoughts, opinions? What about the Liberty?? |
|
Quoted: Overpriced. I am rebuilding a '75 CJ5 right now. I'll have MUCH less $ in it. Of course, there are many bloody knuckles and man-hours involved in this project. Also, the new Libertys have very little knee room, even compared with my old-school CJ... Hmm, the knee room would be a problem for a 6'1" guy I guess. |
| the liberty I could care less for (no room, no power etc) but I have been starting to think about sellin the '93 Wrangler or trading it in on a new Wrangler Rubicon ordered with the options I want. Currently have the 93 and a 2001 Cherokee before that a 79 CJ5 Golden Eagle,an 86 CJ7 a 79 Cherokee Chief and an 88 Wrangler Oh and an 86 Dodge fullsize W150 I had almost no problems with any of em except the carb on the 86 CJ which is still laying in a field in upstate NY with lots of bullet holes in it after I replaced it with the DC fuel injection setup a few years into it ( oddly enough the W150 had the same issues but got Holley Pro-jection before the frustration level got to that 86 must notta been a good year for Carter carbs --the bbd IIRC)broke a few U-joints and crinkled a few fenders but other than that nada. IMHO Jeeps are however a love it or hate it proposition. If you want comfort or gas mileage or quiet ride you are in the wrong ballpark. |

I'm nearly 6' 4" and fit in the driver's seat just fine. I even tilt the wheel down from the stock position. I have had an '02 Liberty for nearly a year and 18,000 miles and it has been great. I love the damn thing. Nowhere near as hardcore as a CJ or Wrangler, but it is still a Jeep. Oh, with the 3.7L V6, you get 210 horsepower. Twist it's tail and it goes pretty fast. Decent accceleration too. Edited to add: Go test drive one. If you don't love it, buy something else, but I really love mine, and have had ZERO problems with it. I really like the Jeeps.... Here's my perspective: When I first got married, my wife did NOT know how to drive. She was 28 yrs. old at the time and was terrified of vehicles -- on our first date, a piece of plywood came flying off of the roof of the vehicle in front of us. I deftly swerved to avoid it, but almost got KILLED because my wife grabbed both of my arms and literally jumped on top of me ! (I was not so fortunate at the end of the date -- no contact --> I didn't even get a goodbye kiss. [;D] ) Well.... I had a Saab 9000Turbo w/ a stick. Can you guess how many times she cried during our first "lessons" ? [:D] I wanted to give her this car (it was brand new at the time) and buy a Suburban or other 4wd for myself. I finally gave up and bought her a new Jeep Grand Cherokee. She still drives half on the shoulder with her hazards on, but I feel better that she won't be trashing MY vehicles. [;)] (she has been involved in over 5 motor vehicle accidents in the past 3 years) I just replaced that Jeep with a new one. A 2004 Grand Cherokee. It's really a nice ride... a bit small, but nice. |

What Emoto said.... As I just said in another recent SUV thread, I have had mine for a little while and LOVE IT!!! I too am 6'5", 300+ and I fit very easily and am more than comfortable in it. It is quick, nimble and more than holds its own. Like he said, go test drive one...If you dont like it, look elsewhere, but I am glad I bought mine. Trouble free and good to go, On & Off road. Note- The "Jeep purists" abhor the KJ, calling it a grocery getter and a soccer whatever. The hate and cant appreciate without ever driving it usually. Test drive one, but do NOT try this with anything but a Jeep; |
| I love my Dakota. Thing is though, I am wanting to have more interior room to put stuff. The Dak is a tad limited on that. Also, I could get into a Liberty at a monthly payment a bit lower than what I am paying now. My Wifes Durango will be paid for in a year, and at that time we want to get her something new. If I had lower payments now, then taht would free up some mmore money each month to put back towards something for her. What ever I get, it MUST be a fully capable off road vehicle. From what I have researched on the Liberty, they are, and wold give me the extra interior room I want. Just thinking for now, but might go look around this weekend a little and see what I find. |
|
Quoted: If you like your Dakota, why not get a 4 door? Thats what I have. If I put anything in the back seat then there is no room for anyone back there. I want to at least be able to have people with me, and not have to put my rifles and such out back in the bed. Just thinking right now. |

Quoted: Jeep, four letter word meaning true off road vehicle. Thus meaning the new Rubicon. Forget the Liberty, no power, no show. If the Rubicon is too much for you, get an older CJ and fix it up. How do you figure that the 210 HP and 200+ FT LBS of torque that the Liberty has as no power? Especially for its weight? Thats more than the 4.0 in the Wrangler I believe. |
|
I gotta ask, the 3 or 4 people with negative feedback on the Lib...Whats the issue? I hear not big enough, but two fo us called BS on that. I hear no power, again BS... Is the negativity all speculation or have you actually been inside one? Let alone ride/drive one? |
|
The Liberty has plenty of power; 210hp with 235fpt. Enough power and curb weight to easily tow up to 5000lbs. The Liberty has more cargo room than the TJ's but less than the Grand C's. There is lots of headroom and good legroom if you have the power seats. The gas milage is not the best, depending on where you live, "winter gas", you can expect to get between 13 to 18 mpg for city/highway combined. The new Rubicon is kickass, but not cheap. It comes trail ready with lockers, extra low gearing and heavy duty axles standard. I won't make any guarantees yet on any Chrysler product, but I do have 27k so far with no problems. Knock on wood. Their latest versions of the Grand Cherokee's seem to have a much better track record too. I have taken my "Libby" offroad more than a few times, and it always ran like a champ. These were trails that you would never run with an Escape, Rav4 or CRV. My family is nothing but Jeep freaks....so I can speak with a bit knowledge on the subject...if you want one of the new Wranglers...(TJ) go for it...especially with the newer NV3550 manual trans....lifting them isn't too hard...but keep it moderate...no real need to go over 4 inches using a high quality lift. For Christ's sake buy the staight six NOT the 4 banger. The 4 cyl is a great little motor that will last forever but it will also take you forever to get anywhere if you throw some real tires on it....trust me it takes me forever to get anywhere....still too lazy to replace my ring and pinion gears...hell...it keeps me out of traffic tickets. Even though the TJ has an interior designed for (or by) an eleven year old girl the rest of the vehicle's design makes it a very worthy "fun" vehicle....you can still hose 'em out and they are pretty damn comfy for a jeep. Despite what the CJ crowd says about the inferiority of the Wrangler it is NOT true...the Wrangler frame is a zillion times tougher and suffers none of the cracking issues that were prevalent with the CJ and though the CJ does have a much shorter wheel base there are many things such as good fuel injection systems and a better roll cage that make the TJ a much nicer vehicle and make up for the loss of nimbility that the Willies and CJ3 and CJ5&7 had. Despite that, I still wish I had a CJ8 Scrambler more than any jeep ever made. As far as the Liberty....I would rather kill myself than be seen anywhere near one. They disgust me...it is the only Jeep vehicle I LOATHE....I think whoever designed it should be EDITED EDITED EDITED EDITED.... The Grand Cherokee is sweet though...but too complex for my tastes. |

Quoted: What do you guys think of the new Jeeps? Thoughts, opinions? What about the Liberty?? I can tell you from experience they are a descent vehicle, but they don't hold their value. This one 1999 Grand Cherokee was traded at 70,000 miles with no engine or transmission problems, but it had front end problems. I will highly recommend the Ford Explorer or the Expedition if you are looking for the SUV. My wife has a 2003 Ford Eddie Bauer Explorer and that SUV is sweet. [:)] |

[:)] Please, I beg of you, dont bring Ford into this. You see, Ford's are my weekness. I have a serious love of them that is a very strong force. My wife is planning on replacing her Durango with an Expedition. Wouldnt do for me to get one and have two of them. Still thinking for myself. Might just end up keeping what I have. |

Regarding "hard core" Jeepers' dislike for the Liberty. The main gripe is the independent front suspension, which is nowhere near as off road capable as the straight axle in every other Jeep vehicle. If you have ever rock climbed or driven over uneven terrain off road, you will know why. As far as a daily driver, I'm sure that they are just fine. 98% of all 4x4 vehicles never see time off the pavement anyway. |
|
Again I ask if the hate is speculation or actual knowledge. Sobe comes with pics of his and loves it, then we get this rambling.... Quoted: As far as the Liberty....I would rather kill myself than be seen anywhere near one. They disgust me...it is the only Jeep vehicle I LOATHE....I think whoever designed it should be EDITED EDITED EDITED EDITED.... You anti Liberty guys are starting to sound like the anti gun fags. Never been in one and dont like it. You dont like it so it must be bad. 5 bad reviews, and not one claiming to owned or even driven/ridden in one. 3 great reviews all from Liberty owners. You 'Libertyphobes' need to get a grip, open your minds and try them. Dont continue your life of fear. As actual owners have said, they are great. Only the speculation differs. Uneducated speculation....brings to mind one name, Sarah Brady. |

I'll tell you what a very experienced tech told me years ago about Jeeps. "Jeeps are great, except you can't go the length of an oil change without having to fix them" Just an amusing tid bit I thought you might like. Personally I've always been fond of CJ's and TJ's, even almost bought a Grand Cherokee, but didn't like the idea of working on them. Good Luck, Max |
