My neighbors son, basically considered my nephew is enamored with old military guns.  He's 15 years old and has asbergers.   Loves to hunt, fish,  and trap.  I sort of took him under my wing 10 or so years ago as we just 'clicked ' and he trusts me.  It's been rewarding and flattering to be honest.   I took him out and got him his 1st deer, the next year got him his 1st buck, and have been doing it every season since getting him over his fear of recoil.  That took a lot of 22 shooting and moving him up to 28 gauge. He nor his family have much money to help fuel his passion so I help as much as possible with gear, clothing,  and ammo.
His brother traded an old shotgun to a coworker for a beat up old bolt action in this chambering.  I helped him shoot it after getting it checked out by a smith.  It doesn't shoot worth a darn, but he loved trying.   Where would you suggest getting cheap non corrosive ammo for blasting ?
He wants to hunt deer with it, but this barrel has to be shot out... its that bad.  What would you suggest for a ww1 or ww2 bolt or semi that would be functinal, accurate, and cheap'ish?  I want to get him a Garand or M1 type (because that's what he really wants ) but the money isn't there.  If you have an old one sitting in the safe collecting dust please send me a message.   I'd love to make his day, month, year.

Thanks

Tell you what, if he has a passport, I will buy him a plane ticket to come here this summer.  That way he can shoot Garands with me

Or we can all meet in Ontario.

Priv partizan makes 8mm that isn't to ridiculously expensive. also you may try a copper remover on the barrel it may help with accuracy

This.  Also, JB bore paste may help improve accuracy.

Yugo mausers are $250-$300ish and usually in good condition since they either got refurbed before storage or just went straight into storage after being made.

What does the bore actually look like?  Strong rifling?  Pitted, dark, frosted?  A good cleaning as above, bore paste, sweets 7.62, etc, as a lot of these rifles had a lot of cupronickel bullets fired down them, and that stuff just doesn't scrub out.  How does the muzzle look?  Any dings/dents that extend out to the bore is bad, as will wear from cleaning (out of round).  Only way to fix this, is recrowning for nicks, or backboring for wear.  Hope this helps.

If you want old military and don't want to spend a ton, its hard to beat a Mosin Nagant.  Cheap rifle, cheap ammo, lots of flash and bang.

Another option.....  for inexpensive shooters with a military heritage, its hard to beat an SKS.  Just avoid all the tapco modified stuff.

Those two are your best options.  If you want to get into something else, I'd go for a SMLE or Mauser.  It doesn't have to be a 98% german K98.  Lots of fun can be had with a spanish mauser, or one of a zillion made for every country on the planet.....  Look around, you can find them....  Currently Yugo Mausers (M48 I think) are everywhere for about $289...

Swiss Rubins are common now too.  Fantastic shooters for the dollar, usually about $300.  But ammo is not common.

Avoid the Jap or Italian surplus rifles.  6.5Jap, 7.7Jap, 6.35 Carcano etc are impossible to find, and mucho expensive when you do find them.

Mosins have gone up on price. A 91/30 is running $200+ now and the cheap surplus ammo is gone.  New made ammo is about $10 for a box of 20 now.

Try this:

I have one purchased commercially called "love my guns" but I cannot find links to that company on Google, so they might be out of business.  These types of bore cleaners have a reputation for bringing supposedly "shot out" milsurps back from the dead.

Swiss K-31,

Ammo is .50c round when on sale and can be held to .5" at 100.

Keep an eye out for a sported 1903, 03a3 or mauser usually can be had for $200-$250 with good bores and the first two are 30-06

Almost all the old German K98s I have shot with mil ammo are 2-6" guns at 100yds if they had some bore left in them. The 1903 and 03a3s were better. My Grands with ball are 2-3" and with match will be 1-1.5"

You are a wonderful human being,  Sir, quite the gentleman.   If we lived close we'd be great friends...of that I'm sure. I've followed your posts about helping dogs get a new home (of which you posted in one of my efforts to re-home a dog.)  And always love to hear about Bimba,  and Crabby.
He does not have a passport and is really afraid of flying.   The asbergers  (think Rainman ) keeps him from doing most things that are out of the box.  Takes a lot of time and patience to help him into something new, but it's totally worth it as he is a great young man.

I would also match Fluffy's offer, and throw in shots from most surplus rifles from 1900-1950.  Again, distance is not helping.

Had reloadable ammo in my head when I asked.  Still, pretty good price for Wolf.  Have shot it before in SVT 40, to keep corrosive crap out of system.

You're both in Michigan.  So if you drive through New York, you can enter Canada at Niagara Falls.  The Silverdale Rifle Range is about 40 miles from the border.

I will drive from Alberta and I will meet you there.  I will bring Bimba Bulldog and half a dozen Garands and lots of ammo.

It will be fun.

ETA:   I will be driving to Ontario this summer anyway.  My brother lives in Toronto
