I went though one for the first time in my life today.  As it was my first experience it was slightly confusing but I am sitting here at home thinking about it.  Are they more efficient than the 4 way stop?  Not just because it's possible you may not need to stop moving but more importantly it seems like it would allow more cars in the intersection at once vs the 4 way.

I think they can be better, depending on their design. There's one in my area that has stop lights and cross walks going through it. Completely asinine design. Generally, I think traffic flows through them much more efficiently.

Europe has them everywhere.  We drove from Switzerland to Belguim and back in 2004 and we loved the roundabouts.  The typical European driver takes them at about 100 kph, that's 60 mph, but they are safer.

*When those using them know what the fuck they're doing.

They're everywhere in the UK, and didn't take all that long to get used to, the rules are pretty simple.  Traffic flowed pretty damn well, although there was the occasional bit of knuckleheadedness like a big roundabout that also had traffic lights for the inflow.

But here?  They're tentative to put them in because they confuse people (stupid people, to be honest), and as long there's not enough density of roundabouts to cause people to HAVE to learn how to use them, they'll continue to be scorned and the powers-that-be will shy away from putting in more.

Old people driving land yachts fuck up 4-way stops, too.  It's not a problem of the roundabout, it's a problem of gramps and grammy who refuse to learn how to use the fucking things.

They are not that common in my area.  One near a strip mall is one of the highest accident spots in the city...or was a few years ago.

[#25]
We have had one on a major artery near my house for a couple of years now. That intersection went from about one to two accidents a week to at least one a day. When there's an accident in one, it shuts the whole intersection down for the most part. This is a price we pay to be cool, like the europeans (europeons?). During rush hours, traffic backs up about a mile in all directions.

Yup, we is progressives.

It's not that the drivers here are any stupider than in countries that have a high density of roundabouts, it's that they don't want to be bothered to learn something new (not that they don't fuck up 4-ways as it is) and the powers-that-be want to be on record rejecting those things that the locals don't like.

I firmly believe that if they just put them in, in place of even 25% of the stop-sign junctions that currently exist, we'd be over the learning curve within two years, and ready to go full-scale.

But no one wants to support something that upsets the apple cart, even if it's better in the long run.

If people know how to use them, they are great but most folks come to a complete stop.

If a roundabout is clear, they can be a blast.

There are at least 2 on St Simons and 1 on Jekyll.

I had a ball at the roundabouts down on Barbados when I was working down there.

Roundabouts are far superior.

That being said, the average American driver is too incompetent to use one correctly. I have seen people turn left into oncoming traffic when trying to enter, coming to a complete stop in the middle while trying to make an exit (oblivious to the fact that they can just circle back around...it's a giant circle after all), not yielding to oncoming traffic when entering, etc etc etc.

Better yes.  But most of the masses simply cannot handle them..lol

People were outraged when one showed up in this small city south of me.  They simply had no idea how to drive through one, so they were pissed about it being built.  It was hilarious.  To make that intersection a 4 way stop would have made it a huge pain in the ass to drive through.

Much better than a 4 way stop or a traffic light at a low/moderate traffic intersection. They've been doing them for a while here so most of the locals have it figured out, just have to watch for the old people from out of town going around them clockwise.

Spending the season in the Eagle - Avon - Beaver Creek,CO. area and they are at just about every intersection.  They work well at keeping traffic flowing.  You do get the occasional nimrod from Texas that can't figure them out.

Not a big fan because most folks don't know how to work them, but they do understand stop signs.

I had a friend of mine tell me how much better they were and then proceeded to enter one and turn left upon entering it (not kidding)....

Around here they think anyone entering it has the right-of-way, not the guy coming around...

Idiots in my area don't know how to properly go through one. I've seen lots of accidents happen.

Half stop and wait before going through even when there is no oncoming traffic and the other half seem to blaze through without bothering to check for other cars.

Old-style term is rotary.  They're OK as long as the drivers using them are accustomed to them, and know how to use them.  The problem is that not all drivers are familiar with them, and so screw things up for the rest of the folks.

They have been putting in a lot of them around here.  They work well and have improved traffic.  The only problem is when people don't understand what to do.  Saw a person pull up to one, stop and put on their left turn blinker.  I don't blame the round about because some people shouldn't be driving

Most of the ones around here have big massive ornamental shrubbery planted in the middle.  Totally kills any sight lines.  So, everyone is creeping around them, hitting the brakes at every shadow.

Then, throw in about 50% of the traffic has to stop and wave people in.

Fucking hate them.  If I know I can go around them via a different route, I take it.

Mythbusters investigated them. They found that roundabouts permit considerably more traffic to flow-- like 35% or so more traffic-- over 4-way stops.

I like them they work great when people know how they work and how to handle their improved effficiency.

You have the drivers that rocket through them, too much hurry even though they don't have to stop.

Then you have the ones that approach the entry, slow down to a crawl, and despite the signs pointing counter-clockwise rotation and the big ass arrows pointing the way on the road they put their left turn signal on and slowly creep the wrong way then completely fuck up the whole rotary.

Which way did they turn?

Among the rules of using them that I recall from the UK, you put on your (I'm going to swap directions to avoid confusion, so I'll be assuming driving on the right) right blinker as  you approach if you're going to exit the roundabout at the first exit, no blinker as you approach if you're exiting the second, and left as you approach if you're intending to exit anything past that.  When you're past the exit immediately before the one you intend to use, you put on the right blinker.

Wish I had a diagram, I know that long description makes it sound more arcane than it really is, it's pretty simple when in use.

Some are not designed well because they are shoehorned in, have poor sight lines, and are mapped out badly.

Good ones are superior to all other intersections. Faster, safer, more efficient, etc.

Yep had one local to me. worked awesome until the retards that couldn't figure out  the mystical yield signs kept crashing into people, now they added 4 stop signs to the inlets and it's worthless.
