Anyone have one? Its cheap enough that it could be cool to mess around with, but would like to hear some first hand experience first.

Instead of real 3d VR, Google has made a cardboard version that has lenses and takes advantage of how the human eye sees the world around it IOT be a poor man's Samsung VR or oculus rift.

EDIT: hopefully, someone will be along shortly to explain it better, thus exposing me as the "barely passed HS" fraud that I am.

I bought one of the nicer plastic ones to play with. I was just looking to demo something to give me an ode what an oculus may be like.  It was cool. I want an oculus now.

And yeah, the 180 degree VR porn vids with head tracking are the future of porn lol

I don't have one of those, but I've got a gadget that works on similar principle.

What it does is use the function of binocular vision to simulate 3d.

Here's a video that you would watch using that.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K6xyPOttq7o

Your brain combines the side by side images into a 3d image.

It's a low tech way to do some high tech stuff.

Some advice: People have various tolerances to this. My mom tried it and made it about 5 minutes before she felt sick. I started getting a bit disoriented at around the 20 minute mark.

Yes, what you want to do is look on youtube and other video sites (even netflix has a few) for SBS 3d videos. SBS stands for side by side.

Yeah or an app. There are a lot videos out there and a handful of apps that demo it nicely.

Yep, left eye sees a camera shot that is ever-so-slightly different from the right, simulating 3d.

If anything, it's kinda cool as a just a holder for your phone while you're watching stuff.

First I've heard of this.

One of my buddies has the Google cardboard... With nice headphones, it's pretty impressive for what it is. I watched some horror movie trailer and was pretty blown away. Full disclosure, I've never used a nice one, so this is my only experience.

It's limited to mostly just tech demos since the phone screens aren't high resolution enough to get a real clear image when they are three inches from your face. It looks like watching a tv thru a screen door.

It's a neat demo of VR tech for cheap. But I wouldn't use it to watch full length movies or anything.

For that price you can get the new View Master that uses Google Cardboard, but also lets your kids explore things like space and stuff.

The only problem I see with it all is the limitations of your phone's screen.  That and Youtube's grainy video which can give you a headache really quick.

People are getting creative with it, though.  I watched a really grainy cartoon over Christmas of Santa delivering presents in a little town square and getting chased by the cops.  It was really entertaining and I had to gradually spin 360 degrees to watch what was happening.  Some of the snowboarding stuff isn't as fun because they sit on selfie sticks and the camera turns around, which is what you're supposed to be doing.

It's best to download the videos in high res, then store them on your phone. I tried to stream VR videos once then never bothered again.

How do you go about doing that?

You'll have to google to find the videos you want to watch. I use an app called kolor eyes to play the videos on my phone. How to download the videos and get them to your phone depends what kind of phone you have.

The kolor eyes app also comes with a bunch of videos you can view (streaming or downloaded)

Just downloaded, thanks.  Looks nice, but doesn't seem to have a search feature, so I'm left with whatever shows up.

There are all kinds of apps. If you google google cardboard apps you will find a lot of info. I think the demo that are like video games are more immersive than the 3D videos.

Can you imagine all passengers on a plane with those and big ass headphones being entertained while the captain is telling everyone there's an emergency and to brace for impact? No one can see or hear him because of the big headphones and distraction. Stewards and stewardesses have their work cut out for them

There was one airline a few years ago toying with the idea of having the inside of the plane outfitted with little LED screens everywhere, patched into cameras on the outside of the plane, so when it was turned on, it would look like there was nothing under your seat.  Not sure what happened with it, but it would seem cool to do that with VR.

I always thought "smell files" would be cool.  You could email your buddy a "skank_butt.sml" file and a small device on your desk would mix it up and emit the smell you specify.    This would really take the whole thing to the next level.

I'm glad it's getting a second chance.  Once the newness wears off, and some really creative people get ahold of the hardware, it will be pretty awesome.

Problem is, no family is going to want to sit on a couch together all with VR headsets, nor will they be able to pay for it.

3D Tvs were supposed to be the rage, but the requirement of 3d glasses hasn't really panned out, in my area at least.  I expect prices to go down, but that doesn't negate the practicality of it.  It will be a big hit with gamers, and I can't wait to get a headset someday.  But I don't know how it's going to be with home entertainment, i.e. family couch sitting.

Cardboard got here yesterday, played with it a bit and overall impression is a solid meh. I think it has potential but finding content is the tough part. My three year old however loves it. We found some cool Blue Angles videos and he really got a kick out of them. For 15 bucks it is worth giving it a try, just don't expect a really immersive experience.

You really aren't going to get an immersive experience from just video alone.  The tech really starts to shine when you have something more interactive.  But you need more than just a google cardboard viewer for that.

Try some of the demos that are more "game-like."  They tend to be created with immersion in mind.  They really try to set up an environment that really draws you in.  Of course, use headphones so you can get more realistic audio.

Insidious VR was pretty cool.  It's on google play and the apple app store.  Sisters is another one, available at both places.  Both are made to be immersive and scary.. so probably not good for the 3 year old.  I tend to watch the demos in a dark room so I don't have any ambient light spilling into the headset.  There are a bunch out there.. just google "best google cardboard demos" or similar and start going down the lists.  Apps are much better than just 360 degree videos.

As soon as you can figure out how to make a light beam STOP after a certain distance, while letting other light beams go past that voxel, set it up.
