Haven't talked to my Father in about two and a half years. I could tell you horror stories, but lets just say I had enough of his lying, stealing and drug addiction.

Got a call yesterday that has been in ICU for the past two weeks as probably won't make it. If by some chance he does, he's never leaving the hospital again.

I have tried to call the hospital, but they will not give me any information without a pin number. Problem is, when he was admitted there was no one there. No one knows this pin number, nor is there anyone on his contact list. Hospital says that by law, they can not give out any info without it, besides telling me he is in very serious condition.

His ex wife lives near there and has been going up to the hospital. They are not telling her much, because they are not married anymore.

I am his closest relative. She mentioned today about me getting a Power Of Attorney. Part of me doesn't want to get involved, part of me does. If I get a POA, am I liable for debts, funeral costs, ETC.? What do I need to know?

I haven't talked to my father in about 10 years now, for similar reasons. If/when it comes to that I'm going to mind my own business and not get involved. Sucks that it has to be that way...

I can see why it would be a tough decision for some.

Thing about cutting someone off is that you have to be willing to go the distance. It was his decisions that put him in this situation, not yours. You already know that.

Nope, the estate is.  Let your conscience determine if you want to get involved.

IMO When they are dying none of it matters.

There is no Estate. He has cracked up everything. He sold his place and went on one last hurrah, problem is, it didn't kill him. Everything he owns is getting ready to be put curbside by the new owners. He has his VA disability ($800 month) and less than $150 SSI coming in. There won't even be any money to bury him.

What I was trying to say was this:  If he doesn't own anything of value then any lenders are pretty much screwed because they can't go after you for having power of attorney.

Cremate him. Don't have to buy an urn either. There will be a simple plastic box he'll come in.

That's what I wanted to know. I'm still not sure if I want to be involved.

Sounds like you wrote him off long ago.

At this point I don't think you can be a POA if he's not competent enough to sign the document.

You can't inherit debt.  If he's destitute then his creditors get nothing, and that includes the hospital.

That's the big question; I have a brother that I would just let the state take care of.  That's between me and him, not advice for your situation.

Shit situation to be in, would not wish it on anyone. That said I think you should step in. It will suck but you don't get a do over in life and you won't ever look back and wish you had. Be the bigger man in my opinion. Best of luck

Depending on the character of his military discharge, he may be eligible for burial or inurnment at a national cemetery at no cost to you.

He got an Honorable. Did three tours in Vietnam. Hurt on the last one. The VA has refused to do much for him in many years because he could not pass a drug test. They cut of his meds and have refused to raise his disability.

I know. I really hate him for what he's done to himself and my family. It disgusts me to be around him and has for a long time. But, he is my Father and I love him too. I'm not sure if I want to see him like this, but I'm not sure if I want him to die and not have the chance again.
