So, you're the proud new owner of a new to you "basically unfired" bushmaster "M4", huh?
Most Excellent!
Now, what to do? Accessorize? Hell Yeah!

Awwwwww........your new Keymod hand rail won't fit because you have the A2 style front sight post/gas block?

NO PROBLEM!!!!!

you got a dremel with a cut-off wheel right???

I can only see the second picture for some reason on my iPhone.

But I don't see a problem with cutting off the FSB and converting it to low pro gas block.
It's a common practice that works.

Ugly, yes.
Have people been doing this for years, yes.

Would I buy one, probably not.

I'm guilty as fuck when it comes to that. I was impatient waiting for the gas block to come so I took it to the bench grinder at work.

It worked.

I can only see second photo also. Looks like a pinned low profile gas block that can't be seen under a rail and cost a whopping $0...

What's the big deal, OP?

Far worse has been done to actual VALUABLE firearms.
12/28/2015 9:15:12 PM EDT

I did that once but I cleaned it up and it didn't look chopped. If it works who cares it'll be hidden under the handguard.

rilfe shot fine....
i felt like a dick for not noticing it.......helped a buddy get his first ar platform and completely missed it until after we were packing up after shooting.

new lo-pro gas block is, what....$100?
this is all jagged and cut up...just looks like shit, and i was miffed at myself for not noticing, and the guy selling for not disclosing it....i'd have mentioned it in the sale anyways...
oh well...still a nice rifle....we had a laugh about it when we took the rail off to look at it. no clue this is somewhat normal....i've never seen that done before.
12/28/2015 9:16:52 PM EDT

The hand guard cap is removed so they took the FSP off, just didn't want a new gas block I guess.
12/28/2015 9:17:14 PM EDT

That's actually a more secure lo pro gas block than an aftermarket clamshell gas block. Pretty sure they could have done a better job though.

Could use a little dressing up, but it's going to be under the free float tube so what's it matter really?

It's like $25 for a low pro gas block, unless you go fancy, which a guy cutting an A2 with a dremel wouldn't.

It's a pain in the ass to punch out the pins and all, so many say fuck it, 2 minutes with a dremel and done.

If it works, spray a little black paint on it and cover it back up with the rail. It is more secure than a set screw gas block.

Clean it up with a dremel and some sanding wheels then BBQ paint it. Perfect.

Adco charges good money to cut down a front sight like that. It's probably done a little neater, though.

I've done it before. However I typically paint the FSB when I'm done.

didn't mean to step on any smithin' toes out there

i know it's not drilling a garand receiver or anything like that, but i'd not dremel a front sight off my rifle....just me i guess...definitely need to paint it at least...very shiny in direct sunlight, even under the handguard.

I built all of my ars with a 2x4 for a block. Works great. All the gae block in op needs is a little filing and some aluma black and itll look good.

What are you bitching about? It's more secure than most low profile gas blocks out there (without drilling any more) and you don't have two pin slots visible on the barrel. Could have maybe been re shaped a bit better, but that's a very common thing to do when you freefloat a barrel that has a FSB. That's not exactly bubba smithing.

What would purchasing a low profile gas block have achieved? Will it look a little more pretty? Maybe. If you don't mind seeing the pin slot in the barrel. You'll also be using either set screws or a clamp on block instead of taper pins.

If so, spend less time in GD and more in tech. You're not going to have a cheaper, more secure setup than a factory pinned FSB. If you're friend is worried about it , a grinder and some paint will make it look fine while it's hidden under the rail.

We did this a lot before you could buy low pro gas blocks.
Also some of us do not like gas block attached with set screws.
