Finally retired my old flip phone for a new phone. What is a good case that offers reasonable protection without being too big? Looked at a few at Best Buy but $70 or $80 for a case seems high to me.

$70-$80 is par for the course for most heavy duty cases.
What kind of phone do you have?

For a very high level of protection look at the Lifeproof cases. They come with a lifetime warranty which my son has use a few times. I have a Pelican case on my iPhone 6 which suits my needs very well; however, it's not waterproof like the Lifeproof case is.
