[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Open Carry Rant... (Page 1 of 4)

Went shopping at a mall over in Barborsville, WV, with my boys last night. We had a blast. Last-minute shopping is almost always done by men. Which means the crowd was big but sort of jovial. But anyway. I spotted a young guy, probably a member here, doing open carry inside the mall. No big deal, right? I caught myself thinking "That's cool, we've come such a long way." Then I got closer. Red flags all over the place. The kid was carrying a rather nice S&W stainless revolver in some cheap as shit abortion of a nylon open top holster with not even a safety strap for retention. It was just riding along on his hip not hurting a thing. My problem? You open carry guys need to at least have a proper and safe holster for your weapon. In a crowded environment I was able to walk up behind him easily within distance to make a grab, if I were stupid enough to do something like that. His attention was fixed on other things. And his holster wouldn't have bought him even a bit of time to retain the weapon. High dollar revolver in a ten dollar holster. Nice. I know money is probably tight but you can at least get a moderately good quality holster for less than fifty bucks if you shop around a bit. Open carry guys, you can and should do better. Don't be another Fatty and Show Boots photo op for the Chicken Little crowd. You're not just exercising a Right, you are also making a political statement about that Right. Always put your best foot forward. And be safe. Weapon retention is a real consideration when you OC. Yeah, I know, I'm just a grouchy old fart. |

My favorite was the fat guy I saw at Burger King.
Wearing way too-tight pants, and trying to pocket-carry wit the butt (the pistol) hanging out conspicuously. He had to sit awkwardly, with his leg extended during his meal. His other butt would probably have been hanging out if he had been able to bend at the waist. Absurd doesn't begin to describe. |
| If you question his ability to buy a nice holster, the revolver was probably was given to him by his dad/grandfather and he got the shitty holster from either Walmart, a gunshow, or the local FUDD gunstore. While carrying does involve a lot of responsibility, I don't think a majority of people who carry see it the same way we do. Just like how cops and military personal for the most part don't give a shit what brand holster they have or what its specs are. It's just a holster that holds their gun; another tool. |

. In a crowded environment I was able to walk up behind him easily within distance to make a grab, if I were stupid enough to do something like that So your fear is that someone hell bent on shooting up shoppers at a mall, will go there unarmed, and look for people open carrying with nylon holsters to use theirs? I'm not sure I get your rant |
|
Quoted:
When people ask me if they should open carry i always ask would you wear a T shirt that reads "i have $500 cash on me"? Essentially thats what you are doing. Most criminals arent intimated by your gun and now see you as a target with value. lol They would much rather go for your watch or purse, than go with a person with a gun. No need to add additional felonies and mandatory sentences onto that or risk your life over. I'm not an OC advocate, I prefer if people conceal, but at the same time, I don't think anyone is retarded enough to want to snatch a gun from a unknown person rather than the prada purse left in the range rover at the local mall. If you have guys looking to knock guns from a mall setting you're obviously shopping at the wrong mall. |

I saw an open carrier at Lowes last night. No retention whatsoever on her nice looking leather holster. She had her badge on display as well. Not something I would recommend, but no skin off of my back. Personally I bought a safariland ALS. It's not level three, but it does offer some retention capability. It's also very fast to release if you have some experience with them. |

Good holsters are supposed to foster easier and less restricted gun obstruction. I suppose OP wants to see the little retention straps or serpas.

That gun is very valuable in his world and he would have no problem setting up an ambush of hitting you in the back of the head with a brick to get it. |

Most criminals arent intimated by your gun and now see you as a target with value. Even though 97% of people walk around with a smart phone worth about the same in their pocket? Gun in holster just says they have at least thought about what they'd do if someone wants their phone and wallet. Nothing can be worse than the armored truck drivers we had come in, they'd hang their money bag on the revolver/holster. Good luck drawing it quickly. |

This has been my experience with 87% of OCers I see in VA... some sort of Glock or XD in a shitty nylon holster with zero retention or a simple button snap, wobbling around on the belt like those old cell phone holsters...
I did see one guy in Fredericksburg with a SERPA paddle on for his G42/43. Don't get me started on OCing subcompact pocket guns. |
| I took four of my employees to dinner last night for our Christmas party. We live in SC so no open carry allowed. One of them takes his jacket off to sit down and I notice he has a HI-POINT on his hip. He's sitting so it's visible to the entire restaurant. No one else noticed it the entire dinner. |
|
I saw a guy in the bank OCing a Judge in a crappy looking black nylon shoulder rig that was held held together with duct tape. Honestly, the rest of his get-up didn't look any better. He looked homeless.
I held up a fist, said "Fight the power." He nodded, held up a fist in return. We had a moment. It was touching. |

I seen two at walmart last night. One had a decent looking leather holster with a strap. Looked like some sort of sig. I'm not sure what the other one was but it was big as hell. I hate open carry. Get off your lazy ass and get your permit. I got off my ass and got my permit. . .which allows for open carry. Now get off your ass and learn proper grammar before posting on the Internet. And that happens how often in the thirty-one states with open carry? Yeah, yeah, "If it stops one criminal" and "think of the children" and "blah blah blah". I swear to god, some of you hard, pipe-hittin' 2A operators are as terrified of hypotheticals as any gun-grabber and just as soaked in emotion and pee... |

I got behind a guy at PetSmart with a huge aquarium in his hands and a 1911 on his hip, open carry. The 1911 had the hammer down on it.

I have hundreds, of not a grand tied up in quality leather rigs for IWB and OWB Holsters and all of them are open top, no retention. |

I think a lot of people here like to imagine themselves running up against Neil McCauley and crew, all decked out in their tactical dress up, and not the average scumbag with the chrome jennings that's never been fired. |
