So I'm on vacation. Weather is kind of crappy so trapped inside and watching some episodes of "Cops". Still love that show. Man I have to tip my hat to you guys for enduring the shitload of stupidity out there. Cracks me up how everybody is an innocent victim, didn't doing anything wrong and doesn't have a clue how that crack, weed, or heroin got in their car or pockets. Lol!
Anyway, my question is why do so many still use full size D cell Maglight flashlights? Are they dept. issue and required equipment at some depts? Are they desired because they are heavy duty and large enough to serve as a secondary baton? It just struck me as odd with all the stuff you guys are burdened with carrying and the availability of compact powerful flashlights that some still use the large Maglights. I can understand the Maglight as a back up weapon though. Those things would leave a mark. Lol! What say you? |

I pulled out a vintage 4 D cell Maglite, put some new batteries in and it's almost like candlelight compared to my little CR123 Fenix. The old days were tough. That and no cell phones. Malkoff dude. Malkoff. I like the C cell version. Have 2C with cool XRE and warm XPG but need to sell cool and get 4c XML. |

Depts will vary as to how they will treat various equipment (issued or pvt purchase).
In my Dept., if it wasn't issued then it was a liability issue. Not to mention, that the use of a flashlight, for other then what you were trained to use it for, was also an issue. Running a tight ship is sometimes at odds with best performance. Well anyway, liability is always a concern for the lawyers (on both sides). Aloha, Mark |

'Ya gotta love that "doink" sound the hollow aluminum tube makes upon a solid impact, it is an acceptable alternative to the "smeck" or "donk" a wooden baton makes. Asp batons just sound different. Of course there is always the "thwap" sound that a beaver tail sap makes...
Of course I never used a beaver tail sap on duty, but I did accompany another officer on an arrest where one was used. I was wrestling around with the guy, and occasionally I would hear a "thwap", but the guy kept fighting. the guy once said "Oh Momma, he hit me!", there was another "thwap" and the guy let out a little soft moan, and his muscles went soft for about a half second....just long enough for me to get the other half of the handcuffs attached behind the guys back. Until I got to the jail, I didn' even realize that during the fight I had gotten impaled on 16 penny nail that was sticking out of a wall. there was a little hole in my shirt, and a 4" blood spot. the tetanus shot hurt worse than the nail wound in my side. Old war stories.... |

Speaking of war stories....
We were just rookies on patrol. My friend (Academy classmate) had come in with an arrest. His flashlight (issued Ray-O-Vac, piece of $#@^) was obviously bent as if something had run it over. He was submitting paperwork to replace his issued equipment. Of course I asked him, "What happened?" His response was that he had climbed up onto the lifeguard tower during the evening to get some unauthorized people out of there. One of them decided to take a swing at him. He responded by swinging back. Yup....he happened to have his flashlight in his hand at the time. Resulting in a K.O. for the suspect and mounds of paperwork. It left me thinking that maybe, having Mag Lights issued to us would not work out so well. Years later, I carried one. They were not approved and I was told to get rid of it prior to the I.A. inspection. Of course, after the inspection I was again carrying it. My Mag Light was later regulated to home duty after we were issued rechargeable stinger plastic (belt sized) flashlights. By then, the lights were a big improvement in brightness. Aloha, Mark |

it does look like some of these are C cell lights. Vary from 2, 4, 6 cell looking in length. Many or maybe all rechargeable. Some of these episodes are a couple years old. Some much older so I expect to see them in those. Some are new episodes though. The weapon role makes sense and would be effective. I'm certainly not criticizing anyone for choosing the larger lights. Just curious. I still keep a 2 and 4 cell with the Terra Lux (sp) upgrade handy. They do just keep working. |
| Upgraded to the led version of the streamlight SL20. Size of the maglight, rechargeable, great brightness, etc. Plus flashlights are still listed on our approved list of intermediate weapons. Is in your hand on every traffic stop so always have something immediately available. |

Mines not d cell it's rechargeable. I've had the same lights for years and they (3 of them) work fine. And yes, I have used mine as an impact weapon. Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile This. I do carry a smaller Streamlight stinger rechargeable on my belt. One is none, two is one, kinda thing. J- |
