What is the hiveminds' take on flu shots? During my yearly poke-and-prod, my Dr. was really pressing me to get one, and axt me why I was resistant. I did have to stop and think for a sec how best to put it into words. Basically, the if-it-ain't-broke-don't-fix-it philosophy was my biggest thing; I've never gotten one, and rarely get more than a bad cold. Too, I kinda like the idea of letting my immune system fend for itself, and keep all those Injuns off the walls of the fort; keeps it strong.
So what sayeth the hivemind? Obviously, there is the fact that the goobermint uses medical injections to introduce mind-control nanites into our precious bodily fluids, but aside from that. Am I a Luddite, who needs to stop hanging out with the Amish and get with the program? Or are flu shots all hype, and we'd all be better off just living on the open range, and going mano-a-mano and lassoing our bacteria and viruses when they run wild? |

Quoted:
Never got one, never will. The shot contains an "inactive" virus, but everyone I know that gets one ends up sick. The only time I get sick is when there is a sudden temp change. Then my sinuses act up a bit. my gf got one this year for the first time in her life, got sick lol |
| I've had all sorts of vaccinations due to travel, work, and just common sense but don't get the flu shot. I had an uncle get one and die due to an allergic reaction to the specific vaccine. I don't want to risk it being part of the family genetic makeup it so I'll take my chances with the flu. My family physician said he would probably do the same. I still get the tetanus when needed and recently had the shingles shot. |

Just got mine today. So far no flu. I've had that shit bad. I'm 56 I'm not letting a virus kill me. 51, I'm still *hack! cough!* every bit as tough as I was at 18! Serially, never had anything that kept me from work for more than 1 day. Kinda leery of tinkering with something that's worked so far.

Got a booster shot in the Dr.s office, nice and smooth as you could ask, and the next day or two, it felt like someone punched the fuck out of my arm! Not against vaccines, AT ALL, but for some reason, the "every year" flu shot just strikes me as a bad idea. YEE-har! Let your bacteria run wild!

I got one when I went into basic back in 1987 and haven't gotten the flu since. This is clear proof of their effectiveness. |

Then my sinuses act up a bit. If the shot works correctly, you will feel a little under the weather for a few days. The idea is to trick your immune system into reacting as if you are infected. |

Hey dude, I bang chicks w/o condoms, don't wash my hands after taking a leak, and I once looked at a picture of Hitlery, without welding goggles on!

Then I got laid out bad. Then took a job that requires extensive air travel. Including Asia. Too much chance of exposure and the memory of the last episode. I'm a rabid hand washer because of this also. ETA I went from a bad flu right into a respiratory infection that came close to pneumonia. I miss about one day of work a year to illness. I'm damned healthy. Fatigue and stress are major factors. |

I get over stuff fast and never get the same one again. I also don't trust the government to fill the syringes, and I sure as fuck don't trust a third party lowest bidder contractor to do it. |

If you have a known allergic problem with the shot then I don't blame you for not getting it The rest of those not getting it are morons... Meh. I don't seroconvert vaccines, so you might as well be injecting me with sterile water. So I don't bother getting a flu shot. Incidentally, those complaining about getting sick after getting a flu shot are right, sort of. The shot triggers an immune response. It's part of the process of "teaching" your body what to react to and how to respond. No, you don't actually contract the flu, but your body responds in a similar fashion while it is building antibodies. Some people have a mild immune response, others a very severe one, and it can vary year to year. And for those that get the shot and get sick anyway, well, they're not necessarily incorrect. The flu shot doesn't protect against all strains, nor is there a great track record for seroconversion. So if you're one of those that doesn't seroconvert, or if you come into contact with a strain that isn't in the shot, you aren't protected. Oh well. |
