| There are billions of IP addresses. Even if they locate a specific IP there is the possibility that the message did not reall originate from there. If I hack a system in China and use that to hack a system in Eastern Europe and send the message from there what are you going to do? |

Despite what the MPAA and RIAA may want the court system to believe, an IP address does not equal a location does not equal a user. IP addresses are re-used constantly, TOR, proxies and other methods can obscure the true originating IP address, and time synchronization among system logs can throw an investigation down the wrong trial very easily.
