WASHINGTON — For months, much of the Republican Party’s establishment has been uneasy about the rise of Donald J. Trump, concerned that he was overwhelming the presidential primary contest and encouraging other candidates to mimic his incendiary speech. Now, though, irritation is giving way to panic as it becomes increasingly plausible that Mr. Trump could be the party’s standard-bearer and imperil the careers of other Republicans.

Many leading Republican officials, strategists and donors now say they fear that Mr. Trump’s nomination would lead to an electoral wipe-out, a sweeping defeat that could undo some of the gains Republicans have made in recent congressional, state and local elections. But in a party that lacks a true leader or anything in the way of consensus — and with the combative Mr. Trump certain to scorch anyone who takes him on — a fierce dispute has arisen about what can be done to stop his candidacy and whether anyone should even try.

Some of the highest-ranking Republicans in Congress and some of the party’s wealthiest and most generous donors have balked at trying to take down Mr. Trump because they fear a public feud with the insult-spewing media figure. Others warn that doing so might backfire at a time of soaring anger toward political insiders.

That has led to a standoff of sorts: Almost everyone in the party’s upper echelons agrees something must be done, and almost no one is willing to do it.

Might as well get used to saying president clinton and get ready to hand over the guns if he's the nominee. There is no way he beats the witch and maybe that has been the plan all along

OMG, is the GOPe admitting that one of the many reasons the base hates their guts is because they are spineless against the Democrats?  Say it ain't so!

The same shit-for-brain cowards, like Boner, are too pussy to confront their perceived enemy.  I'm just so surprised.  Not.

The GOPe wants either Jeb or Rubio as their candidate.  Neither of them would win against Hillary.  I wouldn't let Rubio wash my car.  He's a lightweight.  I could beat the shit out of him with one arm tied behind my back.  Jeb?  He will be bludgeoned to death with George Bush's record.  If you listen to his ads, he even sounds like George Bush.  No one wants another 8 years of that.

That leaves Trump or Cruz as viable candidates against Hillary.  I'm voting for Cruz, but I can't force other people to vote for him.  I don't dislike Trump, but he's the lesser of the two candidates.

God forbid they defuse the situation entirely by representing their constituency. Trump would have been long forgotten if they had bothered to step up when he first showed the which way the wind was blowing.

As has been posted here previously, a candidate needs to excite voters to convince them to get off the couch and go vote.  Trump is doing that, and he's doing it very well.  I just watched his SNL monologue again tonight.  He's a successful man and people are attracted to that.  Trying to shame us into voting for Rubio is going to fall flat.  I will vote for whoever is the nominee, but I can't say the same about all Republicans.  I can't blame them either.  When the GOPe serves up RINO's for dinner, don't be surprised when everyone loses their appetite.

I want Cruz but I'll gladly vote for Trump if he's the last man standing.

And those that be the power of Republican politics in the U.S. pretty much admit right in that article that the only reason Cruz is still around is because Trump is still around..and as soon as Trump is gone he will be next to go.... which means he won't be allowed to represent conservatives either..so its down to Trump (and hope Cruz is VP)  or one of the rhino POS's.... theres your choices according to all of the main people who control Republican Politics in the U.S.....and if they can pull it off we won't even have that choice....I HOPE EVERYONE IN THE US GETS THAT MESSAGE LOUD AND CLEAR.. ITS THE RHINO POS OR THE LIBERAL ........THEY DONT CARE WHICH...BUT THEY ARE NOT GOING TO WILLINGLY GIVE UP THEIR POWER/CONTROL TO TRUMP  LET ALONE CRUZ.....

I hope he is, because he is my first choice..but I think if they get Trump gone Cruz's funding is gonna disappear..go look at his super pacs and who's behind them.. Guys with GOP ties...bet they cut him off if Trump exits...which will suck...at least right now if Trump gets the nod it looks like he wants Cruz for VP..which gets his foot in the door..then down the road he gets a shot..hopefully followed up by a SC nomination...

I don't really understand this logic. Presidential elections are basically a contest to select the world's biggest celebrity. Trump is at least as famous as Hillary Clinton. That alone gives him a good shot against her.

What a crock of crap in that article.

The Republican "leaders" have their collective heads up their behinds.  I am so pissed with the way that Congress has failed to stop the Kenyan that I will vote against my Republican Congressman next year and will not vote for any presidential candidate.

If the Republicans want to have a chance, they better start with the Omnibus bill being worked now and cut hundreds of billions from the budget to include Planned Parenthood and all other sorts of waste.

They won't and they will be dead to me.
