Should I drop $1600 on a DSA FAL?
11/19/2015 12:19:40 AM EDT
[#1]
At that price, it best be a nice Para.

Why not?
11/19/2015 12:25:05 AM EDT

No need for .308 with modern day with bullet technology.

Have you ever carried one further than 10 meters?

20 round magazines?

Name one (modern) Army (that is western) still using the FAL.

Really? I can't even..

Buy another AR, and stop living in the past.

I'm sure I missed a few.

I'd say yes, but shop around a little bit. I bought this one unfired off Gunbroker for $1400ish. It came with six mags (I think). I like the FAL substantially more than my PTR 91.

Its a nice "secretaries"  rifle but certainly not a serious selection. Something an armchair commando would get -- and only to appeal to slow, impressionable children and the dim whited.

Funner than heck to shoot.  Way more fun than an Ar10-ish.

7.62 Destroys/blows shit up mo 'betta.  Cinder blocks to milk jugs.  Really makes them jump.

Fun to take apart and admire the design and cool machining of the parts.  Designed to be completely disassembled with a coin and a bullet.  Got to love that.  Except for the recoil spring in the stock and that takes a special tool.  I think a special tool may have thought up the idea that you can use the bullet to remove the extractor from the bolt though...  DO NOT attempt this without safety glasses and the "right" tool.  Even though the design is very resistant to fouling and you actually rarely need to clean it we all know that at some point we want to take it apart and put it back together.  The design is near genius for this.  Like a 1911.

I take it is the paratrooper model, an SA58?

I love FAL's over the other 7.62 BR's.  They are a lot of fun to shoot.

The 18" barrels are not easy to come by and 1600.00 isn't terrible, but I'd try to grab it for 1400.00.  Then, when they land on 1500.00, you saved 100.00.

You're welcome.

That seems a bit steep in price, maybe they have gone up in the past few years, shop around and be sure it is a fair price.

I voted no because I am down to two FALs myself, from four.  If someone offers me enough money for my remaining two, magazines, and ammo, they are as good as gone too!

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed having them and shooting them.  It's just I rarely get a chance to use them to their full potential.  The indoor range that I am a member of won't let me shoot steel cased, steel jacketed, or surplus ammo.  As a result, I get to purchase Federal or American Eagle FMJs to shoot at a whopping 25 yards at roughly $1 per round as my South African surplus ammo gathers dust at home.  Because of that, the FALs rarely leave my safe.

EDIT:  Here is a pic for nostalgia purposes

The top two rifles are already gone!

Actually, a potential and inherent problem with the FAL, is the hammer notch for the sear being very shallow.  After time and ~5000 rounds (IIRC,) that 'ledge' would wear down a bit prematurely and you'd have a catastrophic failure.

Williams Triggers used to have it explained on their website years back, but I don't see it there any longer, however, you can contact them and ask about it, if you're interested.

I have a century FAL built from a Rhodie kit. Its not a precision rifle by any means but it sure is soft shooting for a 308 and everyone loves to shoot it when it makes a range trip.

Because of the design... Dropping Bolt... they are not a good choice accuracy wise and develop excessive head space. Not really a good design if you are looking at a long range gun...and the 308 is a long range caliber.

A well-built FAL with quality parts and quality ammo and also fitted with optics can shoot with sufficient practical accuracy (think all rounds in the black) to several hundred metres if the shooter is up to the task.  If you grab some surplus beater kit built on a crap receiver and shoot Tula, then yeah, you're definitely not going to be hitting much past short to medium ranges.  The FAL will never be capable of the precision of some rifles out there, but it can be made capable of sufficient precision to hit a man at longer ranges, which is all that you need.  Anything more is academic.

Accuracy wise that design works just fine for a battle rifle. As far as developing excessive headspace....huh? If everything is in spec, headspace'lol grow just like any other weapon. One of the nice things about the DS design is how easy it is to re-headspace it.
