Hey everyone. I'm buying a new home with 10 acres of land. It's not a whole lot but more than I have ever had before. It is out in the country so I don't have a neighbor to my left or right within a 1/4 mile or more and no one behind me for a mile or more. I really want to set up an area to shoot so I need some advice. The easiest way to do it would be just to cut a lane in the woods and put a berm of some sort at the end but I want to be able to move and shoot, and preferably at steel targets. I'm just looking for ideas on how I might do that safely and yet still have freedom to move around. The lot is rather heavily wooded with maybe 8 acres of woods and around 2 acres of clearing. The house sits on about 1 acre then there is another cleared acre or so in the back of the property. I know this is kind of vague but any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

Congrats!
What part of Florida?
Dig a pond on the property to get the fill for the berm.
You can build wall with railroad ties and reinforce the back with fill.

Great, your property now owns you.

Go to work.

The only thing wrong with 10 acres is that after a while, you'll want 20 acres and so on...  You're going to have a great time on acreage, it's addicting. Congrats!

I have 20 acres, 18 of which is heavily wooded. First step will be to cut some trails if they don't already exist. I have a section of trail where I've put up steel targets on both sides so that I can move and shoot. No backstops are needed as the dense woods will catch any fliers, plus no close neighbors anyway. I only shoot handguns on these.

I've also cleared a very straight and narrow lane 200 yards long for rifles. That one does have a dirt pile backstop.

I like to go on 3 mile runs on the trails then start shooting while I'm sucking wind and the heart rate is high.
