I'm probably one of the only people anywhere that will profess my love for this flick. It's just a fun movie and I DGAF what the masses say. Quoted:

I never got how "paper" was the be all and end all, yet the bad guys were always smokin cigarettes?!?
Why didn't they just use pipes? Ya know, save the paper.. Better yet, explain to me how those cigarettes were kept dry after waterworld became full of water?? I do love this movie and am just messing with ya head a lil bit.. |

Damn you, I hadn't thought of that before. ![]() Very small hole in the plot, but I digress. Cigs are at the bottom of the hierarchy totem in the smoking world. I doubt we'd have considered them as mindless villains if they'd been chiefing on pipes the whole time. Cigs afford them a certain heir of villainy and infamy. |

I like the part when they were waiting under water on their jet skis, and still smoking! I want waterproof cigarettes. |

Smokers were the bad guys who used fossil fuels. They called them Smokers, because you could see the smoky exhaust from their vehicles. After they dumped the guy that wrote the script, they gave the bad guys cigarettes.

That movie was arguably the worst in history for huge holes in the plot.
- Dirt is the number one trade goods. Even if you assume that people somehow "forgot" that there was dirt under the water (you know, like "Grandpa, tell me again about how you used to live on dry land right under the water we now float on."), how is it possible that NOBODY ever got curious and lowered a rope with a bucket to see what's down there? Yes, some parts of the ocean are deep, but in a "world flood" type situation some parts of the ocean would be very shallow. - The diving bell scene, where Costner takes little hottie down to show her where he's been mining all his dirt. Kinda forgot about how air compresses under depth in that one. - Costner shows up at the floating village and gains entry by showing a bottle of dirt. Oh hot damn, that's some good looking dirt. So what's he manage to get in exchange for said dirt? Some rope, some food, and a small lemon tree. What? A plant, that's in a pot, full of dirt. Looking at the plant you can see that it contains at least as much dirt as the stuff Costner brought in his little mason's jar. So where's the financial incentive here? Did the fruit bearing plant greatly devalue the dirt it was growing in? - He has a water filter that can render urine drinkable, but can't desalinate sea water? - The Exxon Valdez was renamed shortly after it's little spill. The smoker's boat wouldn't have had that name on it. - I couldn't help but notice a strange lack of a refinery on that ship, by the way. Are we to believe they were running crude oil in those boats and the airplane? - Just out of curiosity, if the Earth has been flooded for so long that people have forgotten they are floating above land, how are they managing to keep their little cities and large ships afloat? Rot and water saturation alone would sink the wood structures, and rust would have anything not stainless eaten through. I saw the move once, when it came out. Those are just a few of the points I remember off hand. |
