We took the boys in my Cub Scout den to the local PD tonight for one of their requirements. While there, the Lt. brought up the Smart 911 program.
For anyone who doesn't want to view the site, essentially you voluntarily provide info about your family (like kids names & pics, medical conditions), home (pets?), and extra phone numbers like cell phones. When/if you call 911 in a participating municipality, your info is available to the operator and can (allegedly) make a difference in getting the right kind of help. He used an example of identifying a lost child. Wondering if anyone has any experience or comments on this? I'm a big fan of not inviting the man into your life, but am interested in increasing the safety of my kids. |

You should have seen the hue and cry a few years ago when someone brought up the Child ID programs some local pds ran, fingerprinting kids for free. Our "Enhanced 911" ssytem here in NJ is a nightmare, it;s county'based and generally adds anywhere from 3-5 minutes to any call for assistance..our county operators are so bad that we encourage people to call the PD directly for major emergencies like Medical, Fire, or In Progress crimes....we've had County operators start yellling at and hanging up on excited callers. |

LOL @ timing. I was about to say I have reasonable faith in my local PD and 911 operators, having just done an exercise with the PD for our cub scout troup.
Now, just found out we're ranked nationally as 83rd best small town. |
