I have a HP Pavilion G6 notebook PC.

The hard drive recently crashed, so I bought a new WD 500 GB one, and re-loaded the Windows 7 Home Premium OS that came with it.

Got it loaded up, downloaded the 1 Gb of updates for that OS, everything works fine (using it right now to post this).

But, it often overheats and shuts down, even just with a few things running like Firefox.

I don't have a great deal of other software running behind the scenes - just a couple of anti-virus software, CC cleaner, the printer software, and so forth.

Does it not have enought Ram to handle Win 7 plus the Gig of extra files and software that's been added onto the OS since it was written in 2010?  It has the 4 Gb that it came with - does it need more?  And how much is Ram now per Gig?

Do I need to clean my cooling fan, which looks like a major issue on the videos I've seen of it - far more of a strip down than swapping out the hard drive or putting in more Ram.

Thanks,

First thing I'd do is make sure the fan is clean and working properly.

What is it sitting on?

A desk.

How big of a job is it to clean the fan?  The videos I'd seen of it had you taking a lot of the chasis apart - far more than just the bottom cover like to get to the hard drive.

Try using compressed air and a vacuum cleaner to clear the vents. If this does not work you may need to tear it down and reapply thermal paste.

my laptop kept running hot. the fan was roaring away.

so, i used a shop vac on my laptop.

shut down the laptop.

shoved the suction hose up to all the vents.

haven't heard the fan since.

been a couple of months.

Open case and blow everything out with can of air (or softly with air compressor). Make sure to get all kinds of angles so all the dust bunnies fly out

Check to make sure fans are working. they are easy to replace if not. (you may still want to anyways)

I have had machines that needed thermal compound between the board and cpu (about $5 at walmart). This one tube has saved a good number of machines.

4gb of RAM is enough to run Win7
