| I will be building something out of wood. I was thinking about putting a hidden compartment in it. For sake of argument lets say it is the riser of a step. I don't have steps in house but the concept will be the same. I don't want it to be obvious and it won't be that deep. anyone have any good tips or type of hardware i can use. Obviously I don't want exposed hinges and a handle. |

Quoted:
Will the lid hang over the sides of the box? I don't think so. Will the back or sides be visible? no just the front of the door Could you build a false bottom into the container/box/whatever?there is potential for a false bottom but that is not what I am talking about right now I'm not 100% sure of the design yet. |

Interesting Quoted:
If it sounds hollow, it probably is. Not a problem. |

I built a hidden compartment into a stair step. It has enough room in it to store a carbine length AR15, broken down, and room to spare for magazines or whatever.
I removed the tread, cut the back inch and a half off, installed a piano hinge along the cut. Put the cut strip back on using the hinge. Then I re-installed the tread so it was fastened at the back, and added magnetic catches to the front. Then I carpeted the stairway, wrapping the carpet around the front of each tread (the treads stuck out about an inch or so). As I was carpeting, I cut the carpet to fit tightly where the riser met the tread that opens. Then I finished carpeting down the stairway. The tread lifts up easily. You can't tell it's been altered when you walk up and down the steps. |
