[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Faux Handicapped Drivers (Page 1 of 2)

| Is it just me or is there a population of people abusing the handicap parking placards? I see perfectly fit individuals pull up and park in handicap spots, reach down, put the placard on their mirror and then gingerly walk into the store. The car is very often a beater, sporting a temporary tag with the side mirrors broken off and hanging off the doors. All other generalities are withheld. I think this is some sort of a ***** Privilege sort of thing. |
|
I'm sure there are plenty of people who do abuse it, however I've known plenty of perfectly healthy looking people with autoimmune, other diseases, or inconspicuous injuries that one day they could be fine, the next barely able to move. If they have a tag, there is a reason they have a tag. |

They are, IMO, gaming the system and rightly so in their minds. |

Quoted: Not as bad as non-electric vehicles parking in EV-Only designated spaces. Or worse, women parking in New/Expectant Mothers-only parking who are CLEARLY not capable of getting pregnant. What if I identify as a pregnant 26y/o woman when I go to the pharmacy? |

| I broke my foot in August and got a temporary handicap tag. I'm no SJW, I keep my mouth shut, but it pisses me the fuck off that I have to hobble from the end of a parking lot and see assholes hop skip and jump into their cars with handicap tags in handicap parking spaces. |

Are you aware that there are people in this world that have a severe medical condition which causes them to be that way? My mother for instance is one of those people. She is a truck driver that has bad knees and a bad back from driving the truck but you probably do not care about that case either. Oh well I am not one of those people I am 6'4" 245lbs and I exercise every day. I would love to see you say something like to my mother in front of me. Probably never happen though you are probably just an internet tough guy. I doubt very seriously you would say that to someones face. Just my thought. What do you think. Oh I am sorry you probably do not have a brain. I on the other hand will be happy to buy you a plane ticket to come here and see if you have the nerve to say that to someone I know. |

Fatass is the new handicapped. These folks are not all fat, just lazy and entitled. There are several women like that where I work just in the garage I park in.. (employer has over 15,000 employees..). They will then jog/sprint across 4 lanes of traffic and a median in middle of the block because they are too lazy to walk to the crosswalk. I know that at least a couple of them are using hang tags from family members. One girl is using her grandmother's hangtag so she can park her shiny new Camaro in a handicapped spot... Another girl has a special needs kid, but she sure as heck doesn't bring that kid to work..
There's also at least a 97% chance that they voted for Obama... There was one occasion where I saw a car with a disabled veteran tag parked down the row in a regular parking spot because Miss Bitchin' Camaro had to take up the spot next to the elevator. |

I am sugar coating my observations. These people are clearly abusing the situation. My PC filter was on HIGH. I understand people have real issues. This is NOT a "How can people be fat?" thread. Hell, I'm fat...... |

As long as you're at the pharmacy to pick up the morning after pill, I'm not going to get worked up over it. |

How about people that don't have a handicap markers but feel they are privileged enough to park in the fire lane. My friend works at a grocery store and one person took offense to the other person doing that and they both almost got in a fist fight. As people get lazier and fatter it seems like more and more people are doing this. I have seen grocery stores with the entire fire lane full of cars.
On a side note in high school I worked at a grocery store. I was just getting there for my shift and saw this young kid pull into the handicap spot then run in to look at the movie selection. This little old lady followed him in and chewed his ass out for doing so. LOL. |

She's gotten bigger. She was only six-two, 195 in my day. Still drivin' that Mack truck though. |
| Like many GD threads, this one has gone off on a tangent. My inspiration for the thread was first my observations (and anger / disappointment) as described and the thread about white privilege that is floating out there. This is another shade of privilege (not necessarily white) that I see very prevalent out there - IMO, of course. |

I have one but rarely use it. I have days I could walk 2 miles and I have days It is hard to walk to the bathroom. Winter time sucks much worse .. You can not judge everyone by looks but I know where the OP is coming from. I think at least half of the people parking in handicapped spots are bogus and their only handicap is they are fat and lazy. |

I love watching people in upscale retirement communities like Grove, OK up on Grand Lake.
Handicapped parking spots are worthless...when EVERY car in town has a handicapped parking permit hanging from the mirror. I've seen old farts out jogging around Honey Creek Cove in the morning and the same people outside their cars and fighting over who is more handicapped and deserves the last handicapped space n the Wal Mart parking lot.

It always amazes me that more cops don't try and meet their ticket quotas from the $500 fines. |

Fuck that "it flares up sometimes" crap. My 80 year-old FIL has issues that flare up, and has a handicapped tag. He uses it when things flare up. Otherwise, he parks like everyone else, so that someone who really needs the spot can use it. It matters not to him if there's plenty of spots left. He's not a psychic, so he doesn't know if all the spots will suddenly fill up. He also has a measure of pride, something that's sorely lacking among some groups these days. |

Just throw it out there. There's a crowd here that will be more than happy to help. |

gotta love the ones at my gym. ![]() Careful there. Got a guy at the gym I go to who slides out of his wheelchair to get on the bench. His prostetic legs stay in the chair. I guess prosthetic is the term. He's missing his lower body from the waist down. Very sad and dam inspiring at the same time to see him in the gym. |

I personally have never such bullshit, but I don't live in OR. The office and my doctor both have "dually only" spots tho. |

I have to join in on this one. Our son had his leg amputated at the hip when he was 16 from bone cancer. I would take him to the cancer hospital for treatments. He liked to stop at Burger King for breakfast, so we would stop there on a regular basis as it was near the hospital. We made a habit out of watching people pull up in the handicap parking, jump out and briskly walk into the store with no problem. On many days we would have to park further away because the handicap spots were full. We would watch the able-bodied people walk out to their cars, jump in and drive away after we had to roll our son in his wheelchair across the parking lot.
I never really noticed until the amputation, but probably over half of the people with handicap tags are gaming the system. When our son died, we threw the tag away. We were not going to dishonor his memory by using the handicap tag for asshattery. Just an observation. |
Another girl has a special needs kid, but she sure as heck doesn't bring that kid to work..
