i am finally getting cable internet to my house .  I need to know which modem is the best right now. we only have 25mb down so its not like screaming fast, also i see now most modem's do not have wireless built in anymore. I am just lost. We have been stuck with DSL for way too long. Any insight would be helpful.

Thanks

Can't go wrong with a Motorola Surfboard.  You'll probably be replacing it soon, depending on your cable provider, when docsis 3.1 rolls out.

You shouldn't HAVE to replace it. DOCSIS 3.0 is backwards compatible with older modems. If he's only getting 25Mbps, the extra speed won't matter.

I'd watch for a deal on either the Moto SB6121 or the SB6141. Both will serve you well at that speed.

Motorola is good....Cisco is better.

I have gone to using all cisco modems in my system.

Thanks for the modem suggestions, what about wireless?

Just get one from the cable company,
This way if they get something newer or faster you can swap it out.
It takes years to pay off the difference between purchase price and savings.

Get a Netgear CM500, is DOCIS 3.0 16 channels usable down and 4 up (true DOCIS 3.0). Your provider may only currently use 8 or 4 down and 4 up and is rock steady on streams. Further, you are set for when faster speeds roll into your area. Cost is about $100.

$10 - 12 per month versus a one-time $60-80?

Asus has been making some good wireless routers.

If you want the best wireless coverage, get a Ubiquity UNIFI Access Point along with your router.

Most home routers run about 1 watt of power, where a UNIFI AP is 23 watts of power.

They are a little more difficult to set up but run rock solid once properly configured.

I just had cable internet installed at my house three months ago, I went with the Motorola SB6121 (I already had a wireless router) so far it has been working great at 45mbps down.
