I want to get into it...
What are some good lock picking sets and what brands are garbage? I have picked a few locks in the past with improvised tools but want to learn/practice more with real tools... I have a shoe box with old locks and few keys

This, plus the Bogota sets from ITStactical.com. Or go native and make your own. Quoted:

Southord sells good picks. This, plus the Bogota sets from ITStactical.com. Or go native and make your own. I have thought about making my own...but to do a good set I would need a good set to "copy" from... or a good set of drawings/prints...I don't know enough about picks to get the angles right... |

This: https://www.lockpickshop.com/PXS14EZ.html
and this: https://www.lockpickshop.com/SPS-20.html ...will get you into most everything. Maybe pick up a set of Bogotas later on: https://store.itstactical.com/bogota-entry-toolset.html I keep this in my daily-carry backpack, recommended once you get the basics down: https://www.lockpickshop.com/KWICKPICK.html ETA: Don't be stupid, use only where legal, yada yada. |

A long long time ago I made a set from the instructions in a locksmithing book I borrowed from the library. I'm glad I made my first few sets but I'd just order them nowadays. Though I still use what I learned to occasionally modify a store bought pick. |

Picks aren't real expensive. I just bought a bunch from Southord. Maybe get an extra for the rake picks and anything else you think you will use a lot in case you break a pick.
I picked up a set of picks along with some extras and a pick gun and I don't recall any of it being a big investment. |
