I have this bike:

I want to turn it into this:

I am comfortable doing everything but the composite work.  Going to have to learn how to lay some glass.

Not a big fan of the exhaust, so I think I might take the styling cue from this one, instead.

Bike is a 1985 BMW K100RS that I just picked up over the weekend in Chicago.  $1500 and a great little winter project.

As it is, this bike is a ton of fun.  Good, smooth power.  1980's styling leaves a lot to be desired, but it's a solid bike.

A friend of mine owns an '85 K100RS that has over 275,000 miles on it.

This one indicates 21,000 miles on the odo, but the speedometer is broken...so who the hell knows.

That issue was a common problem on that year bike.
When it happened to my friends bike they placed the mileage number under his seat.
I have no idea if that is some sort of semi permanet mark or what.
The replacement component was good.
One thing I learned about these bikes from my own K75S was that BMW used Nycaseal(sp?) coated rings and it takes for ever to make the them quit using oil.
What I did was put straight 30 weight Castrol HD oil in mine and ran the dog shit out of it for 500 miles and repeated the same treatment again for 250 miles.
It helped greatly and then after about 1500 miles on regular 20-50wt. and just like that it stopped using oil.

Doesn't seem like it'll take much to change that bike into the one pictured.

Take off some parts, fit a fairing from a Ducati 900 SS , cut down the front fender, ….. the only fabrication needed is the seat/seat pan/rear cowling.  If you look around, you could probably find that seat setup already made up and with little modification you could make it work. Pretty generic look that is on many "customs".

Interesting. The second bike is cleaner with the battery box removed. Likely a lipo battery is under the seat cowl. The front fairing is probably after market.  As long as you are good with cutting the frame and changing the tail and probably moving some tabs around the bike has pretty good café lines. I love café bikes. I have not seen too many K series done over.

Thanks.  My plan is to chop all the extraneous crap and go back to basics.

The heated grips weren't turning off...>snip<. Gone.

I'll put a lot of the reusables up for sale online.  Stock fairing, instruments, etc...all gone.

You know, you could cut off the back of that stock seat, reshape it some,  and just use the front portion….. that would look cool…… then modify the rear cowl that's there…… lose the stock turn signals and rear fender.  You could have the look you want with minimal effort. I would modify the seat that's there.

Interesting project.......could be very cool

Maybe you could save yourself some time on bodywork here: Airtech Streamlining

Looks like airheads only.

Nvm...looks like they have some half fairings that would work well.
