Your pic is a Mojave, the pic I posted is definitely not a Mojave. |

Arizona black rattlesnake. Was hoping you'd chime in. Looks a lot like C cerberus, but it likely is not. Not all that far outside of where cerberus is known from, but even those known populations of "cerberus" are now under scrutiny. Similar looking snakes from adjacent mt ranges are showing abyssus haplotypes in the blood work. This one will undergo sampling for DNA study next weekend, I expect it to show similar results even though it is from a bit east of where the other specimens have been sampled. |

Not only do I do that, but I feed it too. Quoted:

ARF says you can't be mean to snakes. You'll be a weenie if you are. You should pet it and say nice things to it. Not only do I do that, but I feed it too. Good for you! A man among boys, no doubt! Not really, but enjoy your venomous pets. |

You may be the only guy who has DNA testing at his disposal who comes here first for the answer.

Diamond-Backed Rattle-Headed Copper Moccasin.... Might be, have to see what the DNA says. ![]()
Thought I'd have some fun with this one, knowing how snakes threads usually go in GD! There are a few very knowledgeable reptile people on this forum, I was also interested on their take of this animal. DNA sampling is scheduled for next week, the results should be interesting. |

I'm curious as well. My guess was way off, but I'm obviously not one of those knowledgeable people. I mostly know what I'm likely to encounter, and not much past that. I do find them interesting though. I'm still not sure I'd ask GD to ID animals though, we're kinda bad at it. |

I'm curious about your replies to this thread. It seems that this snake is different than what a Arizona black rattlesnake should be. Well either the snake is different or the area it was in was unusual. Maybe a hybrid? Or some mutation?
I know nothing about rattlesnakes other than leave them the hell alone. |
