My wife has some info on one of her ancestors and it says he enlisted in the Kentucky Voluntary Militia in 1812 and was ranked as an Adjutant. What is this rank? There is a story about him being thrown in the bull pen with a bunch of the commom soldiery and stayed that way till Old Tecumseh got wind of it and had his dignity restored and treated properly as a POW. Thanks ahead of time for the help.

If I remember my history correctly, "Adjutant" was a staff officer rank.  It's kinda between a Captain and a Major.

edited to add:  Staff officers were responsible for administrative duties rather than command.

Adjudants have been aides to officers.

Historically the Adjutants were the ones to relay the orders of the commander on the field to his subordinate commanders.  Kinda like a runner, but they were speaking for the commander, so they had to be highly trusted individuals.  Obivously if they were slackers, they could screw up a battel pretty quick.
