So I'm in New Orleans until Wednesday. I just had dinner at Mother's, I got the Ferdi Special and it was quite delicious. I have nothing but free time and it's hot as hell for this Michigan boy, so I'm waiting until it cools off a bit before venturing back out tonight.
Any suggestions on where to go for cocktails this evening? Nothing too fancy, a place I can sit and sweat if need be. I may also need to eat again, being a fatty and all. I'm staying off of Poydras at the Whitney. |

You should eat at Chef Ron's Gumbo Stop one night. It's over near the Lake Ponchitrain bridge. Make sure you get the bread pudding for dessert. 2309 N Causeway Blvd, Metairie, LA 70001 Yes, that place is the bomb and I go there every time I go home to visit. |

This is my go to place every time I am in New Orleans -
http://www.gumboshop.com/ ETA: Gumbo, Etouffee, and red beans and rice and I am done for the day. |

It is one of the funnier things to watch when you bring people for the first time. |

I'm pretty young so maybe take it with a grain of salt-
Tropical Isle - Get a blended Grenade, just to do it. It's hot and humid as shit out and that thing is tall, cold and strong. Everyone else is doing it
Crescent City Cigars - MF La Antiguedad pairs well with the Grenade . Enjoy a cigar with your cocktail of choice as you stroll Bourbon St. taking in all the crazy shit.
Inform a stranger you can tell them where they got their shoes. Brennan's - Motherfuck yes. Acme Oyster Bar - Chargrilled oysters and softshell crabs <- Would be my last meal Cafe du Monde - Beignets The zoo - Get sloshed on daiquiris and observe the wildlife and some zoo animals too The aquarium - They have AC Napoleon House French Market Musical Legends Park Gumbo Shop Pat O'Briens World War II museum |

Cafe Du Monde for beignets and coffee, Willie's chicken shack for chicken and Whille's 190s, dinner at I'm just not sure... there is soo many good things to eat in New Orleans, enjoy Nah, you can pick up a box of the mix in the French market and make them at home. Go a little ways down from Du Monde, there is a little open air bistro cafe thing. If it's breakfast get steak and eggs and a Bloody Mary. It's noting special but it isn't going to be chock full of tourist. |

Seriously set aside a day, yes a day, for the WWII Museum. I only spent four hours there before my flight and I feel I robbed myself of the entire experience. Seeing the actual MOHs and reading about them was just amazing. http://i.imgur.com/BHZ4ox7.jpg http://i.imgur.com/UfQxVNw.jpg http://i.imgur.com/pvhfWzo.jpg http://i.imgur.com/7yGjaaD.jpg http://i.imgur.com/sgPnGt6.jpg I was underwhelmed by the museum. The airplanes were awesome, the vehicle displays were awesome, and the weapon displays were awesome but it seemed like they glossed over much of the history of the battles and instead focused on the "feels" type stories. I don't know, maybe I expect to much. When they get that Higgins PT Boat restored I hope they run it on the Lake, I would pay money to go for a ride on a real WWII PT Boat. |

I think that's the nature of museums. I'm a bug person, and the New Orleans Insectarium is really good, but I don't get that much out of it because it's aimed at the general public and not geeks. If the WW2 museum was as dry as we'd like, it would have to shut down for lack of interest by normal people. |

I'm staying off of Poydras at the Whitney. La Casita for lunch. Business district just a few blocks off Canal. Outstanding. Have tacos. Sit, drink, sweat, people watch- nothing better than Pat O'Briens courtyard. Go in on the entry on Toulouse, not Bourbon. Love will be at the entrance, probably. Tell him Dave and Ginger say hello. Go into the courtyard and ask if Sheryllyn is working. If she is, tell her Dave and Ginger say hello. She'll take good care of you if you take good care of her (tips). Great place to kill an afternoon or evening people watching. |

Ruby Slipper for breakfast. They have two locations. Food is great.
Luke is a great spot for happy hour drinks and oysters/apps. Yee Old Blacksmith Shop is a VERY old bar in the quarter. Sounds cheesy but easy to hit for one. This sounds really lame, but there is a tour called Haunted History Tours that starts on St. Peter. If you don't know a lot of New Orleans history, go. The (male 40's long grey hair) guide dresses like he wants to wake up in an Errol Flynn pirate movie, but he's actually *EXCELLENT*. The focus of the tour isn't on lame one-off ghost stories, on the walk he recounts the (insane) history of New Orleans including all the barbarity and death and lets you make up your own mind. Seriously, my old roommate is a post-graduate level history professor and the HH guide is the only guide I've ever had that makes the history come alive as well. And.....you can drink on the tour. |

Some great evening dining here...
http://www.tableaufrenchquarter.com/ http://www.borgnerestaurant.com/ http://www.emerilsrestaurants.com/emerils-new-orleans Be sure to sit at the chef's bar where you can watch and interact with the crew, and have some wine from their huge selection. |

Today was the coolest day of the year so far. It was wonderful and you thought it was hot? Amazing. Go to Lafitte's blacksmith shop. It's kind of a cool place. Keep your eyes open in that neck of the woods. It was almost sweater weather. I'm 40 miles South of NOLA. Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |
| Wished I would have seen this thread sooner, could have been more help. I live in New Orleans, and some of the above are all good places to go eat/drink. Honestly, it's REALLY hard to have a bad meal in NOLA. Hop on the street car and go down St. Charles, and check out some restaurants and beautiful views. Hit up magazine st for brunch or dinner. BUNCH of good resturants on that 1 street. I like Salu, McClures, Surrey's etc are some good ones. |
|
Also get you a sno-ball.... I cannot stand what EVERY where else calls a "snow-cone" but a snow ball is sooo much better. Talking about ice that's softer than snow, nothing crunchy in there, just sweet and decadent.
And we have some good vietnamese food down here since there's a HUGE vietnamese community down here. Closest one to down town would be Pho Orchid on St Charles. |
| Go to the Abbey bar, they got dead people in there, go to restaurant revolution it's awesome. Do a ghost tour, I know it sounds cheesy but the locals who do it are real good at story telling. Check out st. Louis #1 cemetery and finally check out lafitte's blacksmith bar on the more residential side of bourbon past the bourbon Orleans hotel by about 2 blocks. |

My GF and I hit there when we got to town at O-dark-thirty as they were washing the puke, garbage and spilled food and liquor into the gutters. The wait staff outnumbered the patrons. |

Try to find a nice "hole in the wall" to have a meal, the big names are great but the little places that look like you might die in them are often the best. The place we went to was around the Quarter but not actually in it IIRC. We saw a menu on a century old concrete wall and entered through a gate for some of the best red beans and rice I'd ever had. |
